Apple Discontinues Mac Pro After M2 Ultra Model

March 27, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Apple has discontinued the Mac Pro, ending production of the workstation after two decades. The decision, confirmed to 9to5Mac on Thursday, removes the system from Apple’s website and signals no plans for future iterations of the hardware.

The move comes after a period of stagnation for the Mac Pro, which had been utilizing the M2 Ultra chip since its update in June 2023. Despite a starting price of $6,999.99, the Mac Pro had become Apple’s lowest-volume Mac and faced increasing competition from the Mac Studio, which offers configurations with the M3 Ultra and M4 Max chips. According to Tom’s Hardware, the Mac Pro had been “in stasis” since Apple’s transition to Apple silicon.

Apple’s decision to discontinue the Mac Pro reflects a shift in strategy towards the Mac Studio as its flagship professional desktop. The Mac Studio can be configured with a 32-core CPU and an 80-core GPU, alongside up to 256GB of unified memory and 16TB of SSD storage. This positions the Mac Studio as the primary workstation for professional users, offering powerful performance and connectivity.

The Mac Pro was unique within the Apple Silicon lineup for its continued support of PCIe expansion slots, catering to video and sound editors who required specialized add-in cards or substantial storage capacity. Still, the M2 Ultra did not support external graphics, limiting upgrade options for some users.

The last major design refresh for the Mac Pro occurred in 2019, when it still featured Intel Xeon processors. The 2023 update to the M2 Ultra was the final hardware revision before its discontinuation. Apple also recently discontinued the Pro Display XDR, further streamlining its professional display offerings.

Currently, Apple offers three desktop Macs: the 24-inch iMac with M4, the Mac mini with M4 and M4 Pro, and the Mac Studio. The laptop lineup includes the MacBook Neo, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro.

Apple confirmed the discontinuation to 9to5Mac but has not issued a public statement beyond that. The company’s website now redirects visitors from the Mac Pro product page to the general Mac homepage.
