Apple and Qualcomm Extend Patent License Agreement

September 24, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

Apple and Qualcomm have extended their global patent license agreement, effective April 1, 2027. The current contract, which was set to expire on March 31, 2027, was renewed without disclosure of financial terms or the exact duration of the new agreement. The extension follows a 2019 truce that ended a multi-year legal dispute over patent royalties and modem supply. The original 2019 agreement included a six-year license, with an option to extend for two additional years, which now appears to have been exercised.

The renewed agreement focuses on patent licensing rather than modem supply, allowing Apple to continue using Qualcomm’s intellectual property while reducing its reliance on Qualcomm’s hardware. Apple has been developing its own modems, including the C1, C1X, and C2 chips, which are now integrated into most iPhone models. However, the iPhone 18 Pro Max in the U.S. still uses a Qualcomm modem, the Snapdragon X80. Qualcomm also maintains a separate contract to supply 5G modems for iPhones launched through 2026, though this arrangement is set to expire as Apple’s in-house solutions become more prevalent.

Extension of Patent License Agreement

The 2027 agreement marks the latest phase of a partnership that began with the 2019 settlement. At the time, Apple paid an undisclosed sum to Qualcomm, and the two companies signed a six-year patent license. The current renewal aligns with the original agreement’s extension option, though specifics remain undisclosed. Qualcomm’s license division accounts for roughly 15% of its quarterly revenue, a segment the company warned could decline more rapidly than expected in July 2026.

Apple’s Transition to In-House Modems

Apple’s shift to custom modems has accelerated in recent years. The iPhone 16, launched in 2025, was the first to feature Apple’s C1 modem, followed by the C1X in the iPhone Air and iPhone 17, and the C2 in the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max. Despite this progress, Apple continues to rely on Qualcomm’s patent portfolio for cellular technologies. The company’s strategy separates hardware sourcing from intellectual property licensing, allowing it to use Qualcomm’s patented technologies without necessarily purchasing its modems.

The iPad Pro and iPad Air also use Apple’s C1X modem, though they are not part of the patent license agreement. Qualcomm’s separate 5G modem contract for Apple devices expires in 2026, aligning with the company’s broader transition to in-house components.

Distinction Between Licensing and Hardware Contracts

The patent license agreement does not guarantee continued use of Qualcomm modems. Instead, it ensures Apple can access essential cellular technologies through licensing. Qualcomm emphasized that the agreement is distinct from its modem supply contracts, which are separate business arrangements. The company’s focus on licensing remains critical to its revenue, even as Apple’s hardware independence grows. This separation underscores the evolving relationship between the two firms, where legal and financial ties persist despite Apple’s efforts to reduce hardware dependency.
