Morocco Significantly Boosts Military Capabilities with Apache AH-64E Helicopters
Morocco is undergoing a considerable upgrade to its offensive air power with the introduction of the Apache AH-64E attack helicopter, a development described by military analysis site Defensa as a “qualitative and historic change.” The initial delivery of 24 helicopters, with a potential for 12 more, marks a notable departure from the country’s decades-long reliance on older Aerospatiale helicopters previously used for fire support and reconnaissance, notably during the 1980s Sahara War.
The Apache AH-64E represents cutting-edge Western technology, offering a potent combination of firepower, advanced sensor capabilities, and high survivability. Its primary armament includes a 30mm M230 Chain Gun, capable of firing up to 625 rounds per minute, effective against both personnel and light armored vehicles. Complementing this is the capacity to carry up to 16 AGM-114 Hellfire anti-tank missiles, including laser and radar-guided versions recently acquired by Morocco, alongside 70mm APKWS rockets (588 of which have been obtained).
These advanced systems, incorporating the latest in communications, navigation, and weaponry, provide Morocco with a decisive advantage. According to Defensa, the Apache helicopters will enable the Moroccan army to establish tactical air superiority, effectively neutralize opposing forces - including the Polisario Front and potentially Algeria – and minimize casualties within its own ranks. This shift in capability significantly strengthens Morocco’s ability to counter armored threats and execute precise strikes both day and night, fundamentally altering the balance of power in the region.
