Morocco Significantly Boosts Military Capabilities with Apache AH-64E Helicopters

Morocco is⁢ undergoing a considerable upgrade to its offensive⁤ air power with⁤ the introduction of the Apache AH-64E attack helicopter, a development ⁤described by military analysis site Defensa as a⁣ “qualitative⁢ and historic change.” The ⁢initial delivery of 24 helicopters, with a potential for 12 more,⁣ marks a notable ⁢departure from the country’s decades-long reliance on older Aerospatiale helicopters previously used for fire support and reconnaissance, notably during the⁤ 1980s‌ Sahara War.

The Apache AH-64E represents cutting-edge Western technology, offering a potent combination ⁢of firepower, advanced sensor capabilities, and high survivability. Its primary armament includes a 30mm M230 Chain Gun, capable of⁣ firing⁢ up to 625‌ rounds per⁢ minute, effective against both ‍personnel ⁢and light armored vehicles. Complementing this is the capacity to carry up to 16 AGM-114 Hellfire⁤ anti-tank missiles, including laser and ‌radar-guided versions recently acquired by⁢ Morocco, alongside 70mm APKWS rockets (588 of which ‍have been obtained).

These advanced systems,‌ incorporating ⁤the latest ‍in communications, navigation, and weaponry, provide‍ Morocco with a decisive advantage. According to⁤ Defensa, ‌the Apache ⁤helicopters will enable the Moroccan ‌army⁢ to establish tactical air superiority, effectively neutralize opposing forces - including the‌ Polisario Front and potentially Algeria – and minimize⁢ casualties ⁢within its own ranks. This shift in capability ⁤significantly strengthens Morocco’s ability to counter armored threats and‍ execute precise strikes both ‍day and night, fundamentally altering the balance of power in the region.
