Vintage San Jose hosted a remarkable discovery during the latest episode of “Antiques Roadshow,” Season 29, Episode 17.A drawing by renowned Pop artist Wayne Thiebaud, created in 1990, was appraised at $30,000. The piece, done in pen and ink and pencil, included miniature depictions of Thiebaud’s signature motifs – larger-than-life pastries, candies, and lollipops – alongside a portrait of the owner as a young woman with a flower in her hair.
The appraiser noted the drawing was created at the “high point of his career” and was in ”great shape” aside from a small ink smudge. The owner, visibly surprised by the valuation, exclaimed, “Oh, my goodness… I better get it insured.”
Thiebaud, who taught at sacramento City College and UC Davis before achieving widespread recognition,is celebrated for elevating everyday objects into fine art. The drawing was dedicated to the owner on May 5, 1990, and includes a wedding wish from thiebaud and his family, along with the artist’s signature.
