Anti-Gang Bill Work May Position Congressman for São Paulo Governor’s Race
Recent work on anti-gang legislation is sparking discussion about the potential for São Paulo State Secretary of Public Security, Congressman Derrite, to challenge for the governorship. While currently focused on a Senate run, sources indicate a shift to a gubernatorial campaign is being considered, contingent on specific political developments.
Privately, the possibility of Derrite resigning from his current post is being discussed, but would only occur if former President Jair Bolsonaro personally selected him to be a presidential candidate. More immediately, allies are contemplating a move from the Senate race to the state government race, but this is dependent on a vacancy being created should State Deputy Freitas withdraw from the current race.
State legislator Major Mecca, an ally of the Secretary, criticized the politicization of the anti-gang bill, deeming it “inappropriate and disrespectful to the public,” and emphasizing the urgent need for improved security. Mecca believes that the anticipated strengthening of legislation targeting criminal gangs, stemming from Derrite’s work on the bill, could considerably boost his profile for a potential gubernatorial run.”The public will evaluate what was presented. If Derrite performs well and the public acknowledges it, there’s no issue with him running for governor. I would vote for him,” he stated.
Supporters believe the increased visibility from the anti-gang bill will raise Derrite’s name recognition and associate him with crucial security issues, primarily benefiting his Senate campaign. Though, they acknowledge that a successful run for the state executive branch would require demonstrating expertise beyond the realm of public safety.
Derrite is expected to return to the state government following the bill’s approval in the Lower House, with an anticipated return to São Paulo by early December. He is expected to remain in his current position until March 2026, at which point he will step down to pursue elected office.
Despite the potential momentum, Derrite’s candidacy would face competition from established figures, including São Paulo Mayor Ricardo Nunes and current Vice Governor Felicio Ramuth.
Supporters of Mayor Nunes emphasize his strong relationship with the current governor and position him as the “natural choice” for the governorship, citing the political weight of the state capital. They also point to potential political hurdles Derrite may face, even within the security caucus in the Chamber of Deputies. Simultaneously occurring, supporters of bolsonaro have noted that Nunes’ departure from the mayoral office would place Vice Mayor Mello Araújo – an appointee of former President Jair Bolsonaro – in charge of the city governance.
