Anthropic Raises $30B, Valued at $380B in AI Funding Round

Artificial intelligence firm Anthropic has secured $30 billion in new funding, propelling its valuation to $380 billion and positioning it as a leading candidate for an initial public offering (IPO) this year, the company announced Thursday.

The funding round was led by Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund GIC and U.S.-based investment firm Coatue, with participation from tech giants Nvidia and Microsoft, as well as dozens of other major investors. This latest investment marks a significant increase from Anthropic’s previous valuation of $183 billion, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Anthropic’s chief financial officer, Krishna Rao, stated the company intends to utilize the funds to accelerate the development of “enterprise-grade products” and further refine its AI models. He highlighted the growing importance of Anthropic’s chatbot, Claude, as a tool for a diverse range of users, from startups to large corporations.

The surge in investment comes as Anthropic competes directly with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. OpenAI is reportedly seeking an additional $100 billion in funding, which, if successful, would bring its valuation to $830 billion, nearing a trillion-dollar market cap. Both companies are at the forefront of a rapidly evolving AI landscape, releasing new models and capabilities at an accelerated pace.

According to Angelo Bochanis, an associate at Renaissance Capital, which researches potential IPOs, Anthropic, OpenAI, and Elon Musk’s SpaceX – which recently merged with Musk’s AI startup xAI – represent “the three biggest names” likely to proceed public this year. Renaissance Capital currently ranks Anthropic as the third most valuable private firm.

Anthropic is projecting sales of $14 billion over the next year, a substantial increase from its initial revenue generation less than three years ago. The company has already secured contracts with eight out of the Fortune 10 companies, demonstrating strong enterprise adoption of its AI-powered solutions. Although currently unprofitable due to the high costs associated with training advanced AI models, the demand for its services remains robust.

The company also benefits from significant backing from cloud providers Amazon and Google, further solidifying its position in the competitive AI market. A previous agreement with Microsoft and Nvidia includes a commitment from Anthropic to purchase $30 billion in computing capacity to support its AI systems.
