Anthropic IPO Valuation Facing Pressure Amid Market Volatility and Regulatory Concerns
Anthropic is pressing ahead with its initial public offering while targeting a $1.5 trillion valuation, even as market turbulence and political shifts complicate the upcoming debut, the Financial Times reported.
Valuation Expectations Drop Amid Market Selloff
The artificial intelligence company had previously eyed a $2 trillion valuation, but recent market conditions have forced a reassessment. Stakeholders told CNBC that $1.5 trillion is a stretch, with potential IPO buyers discussing valuations between $1.1 trillion and $1.3 trillion. Based on the midpoint of those ranges, valuation expectations have fallen by approximately 13.8%, according to TradingKey.
i think that Anthropic is going to have to take a discount to get done. They have been the principal progenitor of fear, which is what the American people feel.
The valuation adjustments follow a brutal week for technology stocks on Wall Street. The Nasdaq Composite plunged more than 5% in a single session, marking its steepest drop in 19 months and wiping out $2.5 trillion in market value, CNN reported. Broader market anxiety stems from concerns over the immense capital expenditures required for artificial intelligence infrastructure.
Anthropic disclosed in an updated regulatory filing that it has committed nearly $900 billion in purchase commitments and lease agreements over the coming years for computing power and data centers. That spending figure stands in stark contrast to the $132 billion in cash and investments the company reported holding a month prior.

New Governors Introduce Stricter Data Center Regulations
The market retreat accelerated following the midterm elections, as traders digested the implications of a Democratic sweep in Washington. Voters elected several candidates who have voiced criticism of data-center development. Newly elected Democratic governors in Texas, Ohio, and Georgia have advocated for tighter regulations on data center construction, introducing fresh uncertainty into Anthropic’s compute expansion plans.
Those political headwinds have impacted market sentiment surrounding the offering. On the prediction market Kalshi, the implied probability of Anthropic officially announcing its IPO before December dropped from over 85% to 57% over the course of a week, according to TradingKey data.

Despite the headwinds, institutional investors remain willing to participate, though negotiations center heavily on the offering price. Gil Luria, an analyst at D.A. Davidson, told CNBC that market success depends on disciplined pricing. The market really needs this IPO to go well and the bankers on the deal surely understand that,
Luria said.

Max Kettner, chief multi-asset strategist at HSBC, told TradingKey that a valuation closer to $1 trillion would help reduce the risk of post-listing volatility. Meanwhile, JonesTrading chief market strategist Mike O’Rourke noted in an email to clients that the company will likely be forced to come to market at a lower valuation.
Anthropic declined to comment on the valuation figures as the company prepares its investor outreach.
