Anne Hathaway’s Verity outperforms Tom Cruise’s Digger at box office
Anne Hathaway leads the box office as the Colleen Hoover adaptation “Verity” targets a solid domestic debut of $30 million to $35 million from 3,510 theaters, outperforming Tom Cruise’s R-rated environmental satire “Digger” during their opening weekend.
The Box Office Clash Between Verity and Digger
As the fall box office takes shape, Amazon MGM’s adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel “Verity” is poised to take the top chart spot. This trajectory marks Anne Hathaway’s third No. 1 box office opening of the year, following her roles in summer blockbusters “The Devil Wears Prada 2” and “The Odyssey.”
Production Budgets and Studio Stakes
A Warner Bros. spokesperson disputes those figures.
Box office analysts note that a film with the financial footprint of “Digger” would require a domestic debut near $40 million to justify its overhead. Faced with negative critical reception and divisive word-of-mouth, Warner Bros. has begun leaning into the mixed reviews in its promotional materials, running advertisements encouraging audiences to decide for themselves.

Colleen Hoover Adaptation Track Record
“Verity” continues a lucrative streak of Colleen Hoover adaptations for major Hollywood studios. Sony kicked off the trend in 2024 with the sleeper hit “It Ends With Us,” which remains the highest-grossing adaptation by far with $350 million globally and a $50 million opening weekend. Paramount followed with the 2025 drama “Regretting You,” which opened to $13.6 million, while Universal released the romance “Reminders of Him” earlier in 2026 to a $17 million debut.
Directed by Michael Showalter, “Verity” features Hathaway alongside Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett. The narrative follows a struggling writer hired to complete a popular book series after the original author, Verity Crawford, suffers severe injuries in a car accident.
