UK Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner Admits Underpaying Stamp Duty on Property Purchase
LONDON – British Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner has acknowledged underpaying stamp duty when purchasing a second home, triggering calls for her dismissal from Conservative party leader Kemi Badenoch. The admission comes amidst a series of recent scandals to plague the Labour government, with four ministers already forced to resign over wrongdoing since the party’s election.
Rayner, a key electoral asset for Labour known for her direct dialog style and connection with ordinary voters, stated she had relinquished her stake in her northern England constituency home when she bought the new property. She explained she had placed her stake in the constituency home into a trust established in 2020 to manage funds for her son, who has lifelong disabilities resulting from an injury.
According to Rayner, earlier tax advice was incorrect, and more recent counsel from a senior lawyer steadfast she had underpaid the tax. She has since contacted tax authorities to arrange payment.
the controversy unfolded during Prime Minister’s Questions in Parliament, where Badenoch demanded Rayner’s removal. Prime Minister Keir Starmer defended Rayner, asserting she had “gone over and above” expected disclosures regarding her property affairs and that he was “very proud” to work with her.
This incident marks the second time in recent weeks a minister in Starmer’s government has faced scrutiny over property dealings. Last month, Minister for Homelessness Rushanara Ali resigned after allegations surfaced regarding tenant evictions and rent increases.
Rayner’s background contrasts sharply with the traditionally elite backgrounds of many in British politics. She grew up in public housing, left school at 16 while pregnant, and worked as a caregiver and union representative before entering politics.
