Android Sideloading: Easier Transfers & New Google Rules

March 29, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Google will implement a new, multi-step process for sideloading Android applications from developers not verified through the Play Store, beginning with a 24-hour lock on installations. The changes, slated to seize effect before September 2026 when Google mandates developer verification, are designed to mitigate scams and coercion, according to announcements made in March 2026.

The new “advanced flow” requires users to enable developer mode within Android’s system settings, a deliberate step intended to prevent accidental activation or manipulation by malicious actors. Following this, the system checks to ensure the user isn’t being guided through the process under duress, a tactic frequently employed by scammers who exploit fear to gain control of a user’s device. A restart of the device is also required, followed by a 24-hour waiting period before the application can be installed, and final authentication via PIN or biometric verification.

Google’s decision follows a lengthy antitrust battle over the Android app ecosystem, settled earlier this month. While the company maintains that sideloading remains a core tenet of Android’s open nature, the new restrictions represent a significant increase in friction for users who choose to install apps outside of the official Play Store. The company cites a Global Anti-Scam Alliance report indicating that 57% of adults experienced a scam in 2025 as justification for the increased security measures.

The “advanced flow” is specifically targeted at what Google describes as “power users” – those who regularly sideload applications. The changes do not directly affect the majority of Android users who rely solely on the Play Store for their apps. However, the new requirements could raise concerns about Android becoming less open, according to industry observers. Previously, sideloading simply required toggling an “install from unknown sources” setting.

Google has stated that the aim of the new restrictions is to prevent malicious developers from repeatedly distributing harmful apps under new identities. The company acknowledged that sideloading is a key feature of Android, and is not eliminating the option, but rather making it more deliberate and secure. The rollout of the new requirements will begin in select regions, with a wider implementation planned for later in the year.
