Andrew Santino Says Hulu Special Joke Was Altered After disney Concerns
Comedian Andrew Santino revealed a joke in his recent Hulu special, “cheeseburger,” was changed following concerns from Disney, the platform’s parent company. Santino detailed the alteration during a recent interview, expressing frustration over the situation and a broader pattern of being passed over for golf-related roles despite being an avid golfer.
The joke, originally targeting the phenomenon of “Disney Adults,” was adjusted after a review process.”I had a joke about Disney Adults, and they were like, ‘We don’t want to alienate our core demographic,'” Santino explained. “so, I had to change it.” He added,”I don’t think I’m the only comic this has happened to.” The incident highlights a growing tension between creative freedom and corporate sensitivity as streaming services increasingly become major players in the comedy landscape.
Santino also discussed being overlooked for roles in recent golf-themed shows, including “Stick” and a Will Ferrell project at Netflix, despite his genuine golfing ability. “I’m one of the only stand-ups that actually can play golf,” he stated. He expressed further disappointment that a cameo opportunity with Bobby Lee in a film was a “cheeky moment” rather than a boost for their “Bad Friends” podcast, noting it would have been more impactful “15 years ago.”
He also clarified the status of the FX series “Dave,” confirming it has been definitively cancelled despite reports of a potential “pause.” “That thing is gone,” Santino said.”People said it was on pause to protect the relationship of the show, but that’s all nonsense. The show is done.” He emphasized his limited involvement in the decision, stating, “I was a hired gun.”
Santino currently hosts the golf podcast ”No Bad Lies,” featuring celebrity athletes and golf pros.He lamented not securing a golfing role in the film “Happy” and jokingly declared, “I’m done with the business.”
