Duato and Grandinetti Explore Divorce in ‘La Música’

Stage Return for Acclaimed Argentine and Spanish Actors

A raw portrayal of a marriage on the brink of collapse arrives at the Main Theater this week, featuring celebrated performers Ana Duato and Darío Grandinetti. The play, ‘La Música’, delves into the complexities of a couple facing the finality of divorce.

A Night Before the End

The narrative centers on a couple who have traveled to a city to finalize their divorce. They spend one last night together, a period filled with hours of conversation, laughter, and a reckoning with their shared history. The question lingers: will they truly end their relationship, or is there a chance for reconciliation?

Ana Duato, known for her two-decade-long role as Merche in ‘Tell me how it happened’, returns to the stage after a 25-year absence, last appearing in ‘The elephant man’ in 1998. Her extensive filmography includes collaborations with prominent directors like Pilar Miró and José Luis Berlanga.

Darío Grandinetti, a frequent collaborator with Pedro Almodóvar, appearing in films like ‘Speech with her’ and ‘Julieta’, also marks a return to Spanish stages after a decade. He is also recognized for his television work in the series ‘Iron’.

Duras’ Classic Reimagined

The production is directed by Magüi Mira, a highly respected figure in Spanish culture, with over 70 theatrical productions to her name. Mira also adapted the text from Marguerite Duras’ 1965 play, a work that cemented Duras’ status as a literary icon. Duras, who also directed a film adaptation of the play, received an Academy Award for the best original script for ‘Hiroshima Mon Amour’.

According to a 2024 report by the Spanish National Statistics Institute, divorce rates in Spain have increased by 7.2% in the last five years, highlighting the continued relevance of stories exploring marital breakdown. INE Report
