An Off-White wedding dress, an oversized black Prada gown, and a full-coverage black Balenciaga
An Off-White wedding dress, an oversized black Prada gown, and a full-coverage black Balenciaga outfit. These are the red-carpet looks the Metropolitan Museum of Art is pointing to as it abandons its original plan and announces its upcoming annual gala theme on Instagram on November 5: extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday, according to madame.lefigaro.fr.
A Shift Away from John Galliano
Traditional gala themes correspond directly to the subject of the museum’s major fashion exhibition. Earlier this summer, the Met initially planned to dedicate its exhibition to John Galliano, but reversed course following public backlash.
In 2011, footage surfaced of the British designer in a Paris café uttering antisemitic insults and declaring “I love Hitler.” He was immediately dismissed as artistic director of Dior, convicted by a court for public antisemitic and racial insults, and sidelined from the fashion industry for several years.
Rethinking Ordinary Garments
Despite ongoing criticism in the comments section of the Met’s Instagram account regarding the canceled Galliano exhibition, the theme remains permanently changed. Guests will be asked to rethink ordinary, everyday garments such as T-shirts, jeans, and sweatshirts.
To illustrate the concept, the museum’s Instagram post pointed to past red-carpet looks, including the Off-White wedding dress worn by Kylie Jenner at the 2022 gala, the oversized black Prada gown worn by her sister Kendall Jenner that same year, and the full-coverage black Balenciaga outfit worn by Kim Kardashian in 2021.
Social Media Critics Debate Casual Fashion Choices
The announcement has already divided public opinion online. Commenters expressed concern that the dress code could lead to a disappointing procession of basic denim and t-shirts.
Similar casual choices have sparked debate on past red carpets, such as when model Bhavitha Mandava wore a Chanel jean look to a previous Met Gala, prompting critics to question whether the outfit matched the grandeur of the event.
The Countdown Begins
The gala is scheduled to take place in six months.
