Amy Hunt Makes History With Fourth European Championships Gold

August 17, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Hunt’s haul marks the first time any woman has secured four gold medals at a single European Championships, according to the Daily Mail.

Hunt’s dominance in Birmingham—spanning individual 100m and 200m titles alongside two relay golds—establishes her as a primary contender for global honors.

Tactical Breakdown of the Mixed 4x100m Relay

The mixed 4x100m relay, a new format introduced this year, presented a volatile tactical environment. According to the Daily Mail, the race began with Jeremiah Azu leaving Dina Asher-Smith in fourth place at the first exchange. Asher-Smith recovered the lead with a leg clocked at 10.04 seconds, but the lead shifted again when Zharnel Hughes lost ground to Germany’s Gina Luckenkemper.

Hunt entered the anchor leg trailing by 0.03 seconds. She closed the gap using her characteristic stride length, finishing the final portion in 9.86 seconds. Team GB crossed the line in 39.97 seconds, defeating Germany by 0.14 seconds. Hunt revealed to the Daily Mail that she had only practiced handovers with Hughes one hour before the race began, highlighting a reliance on raw speed over choreographed synchronization.

Dina Asher-Smith Sets All-Time Championship Record

While Hunt claimed the headlines for the gold medal count, Dina Asher-Smith reached a different milestone. The 30-year-old secured her eighth European gold medal and 11th overall medal of any color, which the Daily Mail reports as the outright female record in the 92-year history of the championships.

According to the BBC, she finished fifth in the 100m final and took bronze in the 200m. In the 200m final, BBC Radio 5 Live analyst Allison Curbishley noted that Asher-Smith began to over-stride and her hips dropped during the final push, allowing Hunt and Adeleke to pass her. Asher-Smith told BBC TV that despite the bronze, she was happy to continue being one of the fastest women in the world ten years after her first European title.

British Dominance Across Sprint and Middle Distance

The success in the mixed relay was part of a broader sweep for Team GB in Birmingham. The BBC reports that Romell Glave and Jeremiah Azu secured a one-two finish in the men’s 100m, and Matthew Hudson-Smith won the 400m. Additionally, Georgia Hunter Bell secured gold in the 1500m with a time of 4:07.78, finishing over a second ahead of Poland’s Klaudia Kazimierska.

The Daily Mail describes Hunter Bell’s 1500m victory as a tactical masterclass. Hunter Bell dictated a slow pace from the front before accelerating in the final 300m to neutralize Kazimierska’s challenge. This victory is particularly notable given that Hunter Bell previously stepped away from the sport for five years during her twenties.

Market Implications and Global Outlook

While she dominated the European field, the Daily Mail notes that the primary intrigue now centers on how she will fare against top-tier athletes from the United States and the Caribbean.
