manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has stressed the need for sustained high performance as his team travels too Fulham on Sunday, seeking their first victory of the Premier League season.Amorim highlighted a positive pre-season and an encouraging performance in the opening match against Arsenal as foundations to build upon.
Despite a 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford against the reigning Premier League runners-up, Amorim saw reason for optimism. He acknowledged both strengths and areas for advancement within the squad. “Both things,” he stated, “I think we did well, we played well, but there is a lot of things that we need to improve.”
Amorim emphasized the importance of adapting to each individual game. ”We need to understand that every game has its history. The space and the opponent is not going to be the same,” he explained. “Even the duty on the game could be a little bit different and that has a lot of influence on the game.” He stressed that consistency isn’t simply repeating tactics, but “to maintain the level and not drop too much.” He noted the team’s consistency was already evident during pre-season and the Arsenal match.
Looking ahead to the match against Fulham,Amorim acknowledged the difficulty of facing Marco Silva’s side. ”It’s always hard to play against Fulham,” he said. “They have a clear identity.” He praised Silva’s experience and tactical versatility, noting his ability to “change several things, cover several spaces” and adapt his approach from game to game. Amorim believes Fulham’s experience in the league contributes to their confidence.
united have a 1-1 record against Fulham under Amorim, securing a 1-0 league win at Craven cottage in january, but losing in the FA Cup on penalties at Old Trafford in March.
amorim confirmed that Noussair Mazraoui and Lisandro Martinez remain unavailable for Sunday’s match. He also faces a decision regarding the goalkeeping position, considering whether to start andre Onana in place of Altay Bayindir. Onana had recovered from a hamstring injury but was absent from the squad against Arsenal. Rasmus Hojlund was also left out of the squad against Arsenal amid ongoing speculation about his future.
The manager also addressed the situation surrounding young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, who was on the bench for the Arsenal game. While he avoided commenting directly on contract negotiations, Amorim spoke to Mainoo’s development, stating, “We have to understand and they have to understand, especially the young players, that there is phases in the season… Nowadays it’s normal with a lot of games, things are going to change, but he is there, he’s fighting, he’s training, so he’s one more option for us to win games.”
