Designing the Hospital of Tomorrow, Today
A leading healthcare provider partnered with Dassault Systèmes to revolutionize its facility design process, moving beyond conventional blueprints to a fully immersive, data-driven approach.Recognizing the need to proactively address workflow challenges and optimize patient care spaces, the hospital leveraged Dassault Systèmes’ Virtual Twin as a service, gaining access to cutting-edge modeling and simulation expertise without significant internal investment.
The project began with a deep dive into the existing checkup center, where consultants collaborated with doctors, nurses, and administrators to pinpoint areas for enhancement – from congested waiting rooms to inefficient patient pathways. This understanding informed the creation of detailed virtual twins of key areas including the checkup center, operating rooms, and recovery units. Utilizing building information modeling (BIM) data, architectural plans, and supplier specifications, the team employed the 3DEXPERIENCE DELMIA platform to build realistic, interactive environments.
These weren’t simply static 3D models. The virtual hospital was brought to life through dynamic simulations,replicating real-world scenarios like peak-hour patient check-ins,emergency room transfers,and shift changes. Flow simulations revealed potential bottlenecks and highlighted opportunities to streamline operations, while allowing staff to visualize how design choices would impact their daily workflows.
To truly bridge the gap between concept and reality, healthcare professionals where invited to experiance the future hospital firsthand through immersive virtual reality. Surgeons virtually “walked” through redesigned operating theaters, evaluating space and equipment placement. Nurses tested different storage layouts, and anesthesiologists assessed the optimal positioning of monitoring systems.
Over 40 participants engaged in these interactive workshops, providing invaluable feedback through collaborative debriefs following each virtual walkthrough. This iterative process allowed for rapid prototyping and adjustments,accelerating the change management process and ensuring the final design truly met the needs of both patients and staff. By embracing this innovative approach, the hospital is poised to deliver a more efficient, comfortable, and patient-centered healthcare experience.
