América vs Puebla: Can América Overcome Crisis with Liga MX Win?

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Chivas de Guadalajara defeated Club América 1-0 Saturday evening at Estadio Akron, extending their perfect start to the Clausura 2026 Liga MX season and deepening concerns for the struggling Mexico City club.

The decisive goal came in the 42nd minute from Armando ‘Hormiga’ González, marking his fifth goal of the tournament. González scored off a corner kick, securing the victory for Chivas and solidifying their position atop the Liga MX standings. This is the second consecutive Clásico Nacional decided by a goal from González, according to TUDN.

The loss represents a setback for América, who were seeking their 100th victory in the history of the Clásico Nacional. Instead, Chivas claimed their 82nd win in the rivalry. América now sits tenth in the Liga MX table with eight points, following their second defeat of the season. They will next face Puebla at Estadio Cuauhtémoc.

Chivas, meanwhile, have won all six of their matches in the Clausura 2026 tournament. They are currently the second-highest scoring team in the league with 11 goals, trailing only Pumas by one. Their next challenge will be an away match against Cruz Azul, followed by a visit to the defending champion Toluca at Estadio Nemesio Diez.

Despite the result, América manager André Jardine praised Chivas following the match, according to Marca. The defensive performance of Jardine’s squad allowed only three goals through six matches, the second-best mark in the league.

The victory for Chivas was their first against América in Guadalajara in Liga MX since the Apertura 2020 quarterfinals, where Cristian Calderón scored in the first leg and followed with a brace in the return leg to eliminate América. The win also ended a four-match scoreless streak for Chivas in the Clásico Nacional at Estadio Akron.
