Amazon CEO Andy Jassy Attributes 14,000 Layoffs to Cultural Realignment, Not Cost-Cutting or AI
SEATTLE – Amazon CEO Andy Jassy defended the company’s recent decision to lay off approximately 14,000 employees, stating the move was driven by a need to streamline operations and refocus company culture, rather than solely by cost-cutting measures or the rise of artificial intelligence. Jassy’s comments, made during a recent quarterly earnings call, signal a broader strategic shift within the tech giant as it navigates a period of rapid technological change.
The layoffs, impacting various teams across Amazon, are intended to address organizational bloat that Jassy believes developed as the company expanded. “As you get bigger, with more businesses, more people, more locations, more types of businesses you’re in,you end up with a lot more people than what you had before, and you end up with a lot more layers,” he explained. Jassy warned that this growth can inadvertently “weaken the ownership of the people that you have who are doing the actual work.”
Amazon’s restructuring follows similar workforce reductions at other major corporations, including Salesforce,Target, and Paramount, which have collectively laid off thousands of workers in recent months.Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell noted this week that several large companies have cited AI as a factor in hiring freezes or layoffs, stating the Fed is “watching that very carefully.” Though, a recent Goldman Sachs study found that only 11% of companies are actively linking layoffs to AI, though that figure rises to about a third within the technology, media, and telecommunications sectors.
Jassy emphasized the importance of agility and efficiency in the face of ongoing “technological change.” “it’s crucial to be lean, it’s critically importent to be flat, and it’s important to move fast,” he stated. “That’s what we’re going to do.” An Amazon spokesperson declined to comment further on the matter.
