The Amazon warehouses will soon have as many robots as people. You won’t have to wait long at this pace until the real staff will be numerically in the minority, Futurism.com reports.
Amazon says it has now placed the highest robotes of all time in its premises – more than one million, so the number of robots is almost equal to the number of people’s employees. In total, Amazon employs 1.56 million people, although the company does not specify the exact number of workers in the warehouses.
Jeff Bezos, the company has been experimenting with its mechanical labor for years. Nowadays, robots help to perform a variety of tasks, ranging from parcels to the floor and unloading them from trucks to removing items from the shelves.
Recently, Amazon has been reported to experiment with humanoid robots that can drive in shipping vans and personally deliver packages to customer doors.
The e-commerce giant claims that about 75% of its global supplies are somehow done by robotics and has helped to increase productivity. This has relieved the pressure associated with high -staff turnover, the jargon of employers, which denotes dismissal or frequent departure from work.
The rapid pace of automation is a disturbing prospect for a company known for harsh working conditions, wage theft high -staff turnover and hostility to work organizers.
However, some employees are pleased with the presence of robots, which means they need to do less tiring physical work. And Amazon also claims that it actually helps to create better paid jobs, as they need jobs to monitor robots.
In fact, it is inevitable that the robots will deprive people of people they don’t want to do anymore. At the same time, however, robots still have difficulty with many important tasks that can be easily accomplished for people, such as sorting caste or selecting individual items.
