Amanda Peet Cancer Diagnosis: Parents’ Hospice Care

March 23, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Actress Amanda Peet revealed in a personal essay published Saturday that she was diagnosed with breast cancer last fall while simultaneously navigating her parents’ concurrent illnesses and eventual deaths. The essay, published in The New Yorker, details a period of intense emotional and physical strain for the 54-year-old actress.

Peet learned of the potential issue during a routine scan on August 29, 2025, when her doctor noticed an anomaly on an ultrasound. A subsequent biopsy confirmed the presence of a compact tumor. “Dr. K. Usually chatted me up while she examined me, but this time she went silent,” Peet wrote. “She told me that she didn’t like the way something looked on the ultrasound and wanted to perform a biopsy. After the procedure, she said that she would walk the sample over to Cedars-Sinai and hand-deliver it to Pathology. That’s when I knew.”

The diagnosis coincided with both of Peet’s parents entering hospice care, her father on the West Coast and her mother on the East Coast, following a long divorce. Her father died unexpectedly before she could reach him, she wrote. “I didn’t craft it before my father took his last breath, but I got to witness his body before it was taken from his apartment,” Peet recounted. Her mother, who had late-stage Parkinson’s disease, passed away shortly after.

As she awaited further test results, Peet described researching “lobular breast cancer” online, despite promising her husband she would avoid self-diagnosis. She learned that this type of breast cancer can be “tricky” and “insidious” compared to the more common ductal form, often underestimated in size and carrying a less optimistic long-term prognosis.

Doctors later discovered a second tumor in the same breast, which proved to be benign, ultimately leading to a recommendation for a lumpectomy and radiation rather than more aggressive treatments like chemotherapy or mastectomy. Peet received a favorable diagnosis, described as “all poodle features” by her doctor, indicating a hormone-receptor-positive and HER2-negative cancer, which generally responds well to treatment. She received a clear scan earlier in 2026, according to reports.

Peet’s essay, titled “My Season of Ativan,” details her reliance on the anti-anxiety medication to cope with the overlapping crises. She described a period of intense anxiety and emotional exhaustion as she processed her own health battle alongside the grief of losing both parents.
