Altadena, CA – The Getty has announced a significant $420,000 grant to the L.A. Conservancy to spearhead a cultural asset mapping project in Altadena. This crucial initiative aims to meticulously track, chronicle, and maintain the region’s rich cultural, historic, and architectural heritage, notably in the wake of the destructive Eaton fire that ravaged the area in January.
Community involvement will be at the heart of this project. The L.A. Conservancy will work closely with residents to document not onyl physical structures and sites but also the intangible aspects of Altadena’s heritage, including local traditions, oral histories, and cultural practices. A key focus will be cataloging longtime businesses that have significantly contributed to the social fabric of Altadena’s diverse neighborhoods.
The data gathered will be used in collaboration with the L.A. County Department of Regional Planning to ensure that future policy discussions and decisions regarding rebuilding efforts in Altadena are informed by a deep understanding of it’s heritage.
The absence of comprehensive cultural mapping has intricate rebuilding efforts in Altadena, an unincorporated area of Los Angeles County. This stands in contrast to areas like Pacific Palisades, which, through SurveyLA, already had a documented record of its cultural heritage before facing similar fire damage.
“Tackling this incomplete record of Altadena’s cultural resources, both built and intangible,is critical for the community as it contemplates rebuilding,” stated Joan Weinstein, director of the Getty Foundation,in a press release.”L.A. Conservancy is an excellent partner to lead an alliance of community-based organizations and preservation professionals who are working to ensure that Altadena’s vibrant cultural history is not lost in redevelopment efforts.”
The grant will enable the L.A. Conservancy to create a comprehensive inventory of Altadena’s heritage sites, which will be accessible through an online map.
In related news, Artists at Work, a program providing artists with employment, benefits, and a steady salary for 18-month terms, has announced its 2025-26 participants. Among them is Altadena resident Alma Cielo, a ceramicist who lost her home in the Eaton fire. Cielo will collaborate with the L.A. Conservancy during her term, focusing on post-fire recovery through her art.
