Almería Secures La Liga Promotion with Huesca Victory | Lopy Shines
Huesca fell 3-1 to Almería on Saturday, a result propelled by a goal from Dion Lopy, marking a significant performance for the Senegalese midfielder.
Despite playing with a numerical disadvantage, Almería continued to press for goals, culminating in Lopy’s decisive third goal. According to reports, Lopy skillfully maneuvered past the Huesca goalkeeper to score with a delicate touch.
The victory comes amidst a period of scrutiny for Lopy, who recently experienced a tense exchange with manager Rubi during a substitution in a match against Eibar in November 2025. The incident involved Lopy making gestures and muttering as he left the field, initially ignoring Rubi’s attempt at a handshake. The situation escalated with a pointed finger from Rubi and a subsequent conversation mediated by other players.
Lopy’s disciplinary record has been a point of concern, having previously broken the record for the most yellow cards in a season with 19 cautions, plus one in the promotion playoffs. This season, he has already accumulated four yellow cards and one red card in league play.
Almería has reportedly been fielding inquiries regarding Lopy’s transfer, with clubs from Real Betis in Spain, as well as France and England expressing interest. The club has reportedly set a price range of 15-20 million euros for the midfielder, having originally acquired him from Stade Reims for 6.5 million euros plus 3.5 million in variables two years ago. Previous offers from OGC Nice and an unnamed Premier League club have been rejected as insufficient.
Following recent high-profile sales of players like Luis Suárez and Marc Pubill, Almería appears determined to retain key players, with the club reportedly “contundente” (firm) in its stance regarding Lopy. The club has already generated significant revenue through player sales this summer, exceeding 22 million euros from the transfers of Suárez and Pubill.
