Allergy Cases Surge as Climate Change Fuels Pollen Levels
Hermosillo, sonora – A rise in allergic rhinitis, asthma, and combined respiratory ailments is being reported in Hermosillo as changing climate conditions contribute to increased pollen and weed counts, according to local physician Dr. José Luis Alomía.The seasonal surge is further exacerbated by dietary factors, specifically the consumption of histamine-rich foods.
The increase in allergy sufferers is a growing public health concern, with the World Health Association (WHO) projecting that half the global population will experience allergies by 2050. The current spike in cases locally reflects a broader trend linked to environmental shifts and their impact on allergen production. This poses challenges for healthcare systems and underscores the need for preventative measures and informed dietary choices.
Dr.Alomía explained that the current season witnesses a notable release of pollen into the surroundings, a common occurrence in semi-arid climates.”All the pollen enters the environment at this time, it is very normal and occurs in semi-arid climates like ours. During this season, some people get worse, also due to our diet, by consuming a large amount of seafood, tuna, avocado and pork, foods that contain a high amount of histamine. This causes so many allergies,” he stated.
He noted a particular increase in consultations for allergic rhinitis and asthma during the fall and winter months. Individuals experiencing allergy symptoms are advised to consider dietary adjustments and consult with healthcare professionals for appropriate management strategies.
