All Four Irish Provinces Win European Opening Weekend Matches

All Four Irish Provinces Win European Opening Weekend Matches

October 19, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

All four Irish provinces won on the opening weekend of European rugby competitions for the first time in five seasons, capped by Munster defeating Racing 92 33-25 on an emotional night at Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

Leinster and Ulster Secure Opening Weekend Bonus Points

Leinster set the tone for the provinces by defeating old foes Clermont 43-23 away on Saturday, securing a bonus-point victory despite welcoming back only nine frontliners a week previously. Simultaneously, Ulster secured a 40-21 bonus-point win in the Challenge Cup away against Zebre Parma. Connacht returned to the Champions Cup after a four-year hiatus to defeat Saracens 45-36 in a seven-tries-to-six encounter at Dexcom Stadium.

Munster Honors Anthony Foley Against Racing 92

Munster completed the clean sweep for the provinces by overcoming Racing 92 33-25 at Páirc Uí Chaoimh. The match coincided with the 10th anniversary of Anthony Foley’s passing in a Parisian hotel on the morning of a scheduled match against the same opponents a decade ago. Following the fixture, the Munster squad and management formed a circle on the pitch to sing their dressing room anthem, Stand Up and Fight. Jack O’Donoghue, the sole Munster player remaining from both the 2016 Glasgow match following Foley’s funeral and Saturday’s fixture, described the occasion as deeply emotional. Head coach Clayton McMillan acknowledged the immense energy dedicated to the emotional week before turning attention toward an upcoming United Rugby Championship fixture against Leinster at the Aviva Stadium.

McMillan Debuts Charlie O’Shea in Champions Cup

McMillan’s team selection featured a Champions Cup debut for 20-year-old academy outhalf Charlie O’Shea in only his fourth Munster appearance. While Munster missed out on a bonus point under amended rules by scoring five tries to three, McMillan expressed personal preference for a format that rewards teams for clear dominance without bonus points. Munster prepares to face Leinster in the URC next Saturday at 6pm, followed by a December fixture against Bristol.
