Alibaba and Honor Partner to Launch Agentic AI Smartphones via Qwen Intelligence
On September 22, 2026, Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. unveiled Qwen Intelligence at the Apsara Conference in Hangzhou, introducing a full-stack AI platform built to let smartphone manufacturers run advanced, cross-app assistant features directly on mobile devices.
A Three-Layer Architecture for Mobile AI
The platform relies on a three-layer architecture engineered to execute complex tasks across multiple applications. A mobile-optimized Qwen foundation model forms the base, which Alibaba positions as an affordable alternative to porting general-purpose cloud models directly onto hardware.
The middle platform layer supports independent model deployment, tool governance, and automated evaluation. Meanwhile, the top layer provides ready-to-use agents aimed at vertical domains, according to Alibaba Cloud documentation.
Steven Hoi Introduces Qwen Intelligence Platform
Steven Hoi, head of Qwen Mobile AI at Token Foundry and vice president of Alibaba Token Hub, introduced the platform in Hangzhou. “Agentic smartphones are the primary gateway bridging personal AI and the physical world,” Hoi said during the launch presentation.
“Qwen Intelligence integrates mobile-optimized Qwen models with a custom-engineered harness, empowering phone makers to deliver seamless, personal intelligence to their users,” Hoi added.
Three Dedicated Agents for Planning, Execution, and Creation
The platform rolls out with three dedicated agents to demonstrate its capabilities. The Mobile Planner Agent handles task decomposition and tool orchestration, breaking requests down into calendar entries, travel bookings, and dynamic adjustments if plans change.
The Mobile Use Agent executes actions across different applications using a hybrid API-first and graphical user interface model, governed by security and privacy boundaries. A third offering, the Mobile Creative Agent, provides a lightweight model tailored for on-device image generation and content editing.
Honor Integrates Technology into Magic9 Series
Honor serves as the first hardware partner to deploy the technology, integrating the software into its MagicOS operating system, Heute reported. Devices incorporating Qwen Intelligence include the upcoming Honor Magic9 series—slated for release on September 28—alongside the Honor Robot Phone.
This integration aims to let users execute multi-step requests with a single voice or text instruction, eliminating the need to manually switch between individual apps.
Regional Rollout and Technical Challenges Remain Unconfirmed
While Alibaba Cloud materials outline the structural components and initial hardware pairings, concrete details regarding broader regional rollouts, such as availability in Austria, remain unconfirmed in current announcements.
Technical challenges involving personal data handling, app permissions, and execution verification will determine how effectively the agents operate outside controlled demonstration environments.
