Alexandre Pato Consortium Completes Northampton Town Takeover

September 30, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

The takeover of Northampton Town by a consortium including former AC Milan, Chelsea, and Brazil forward Alexandre Pato has been completed, leaving the League Two club debt-free following regulatory approval from the Independent Football Regulator and the English Football League.

Regulatory Approval and Shareholding Structure

Sports Alpha Capital (SAC) secured approval for their proposed deal earlier this month from both the Independent Football Regulator and the English Football League, according to the official club announcement. SAC has taken a 70% shareholding in Northampton Town Ventures Limited, the corporate entity that owns the majority of shares in the League Two club. Meanwhile, existing owners David Bower, Nigel Le Quesne, and Kelvin Thomas collectively retain a 30% shareholding.

The financial restructuring leaves the club debt-free, arriving just months after Northampton announced a pre-tax loss of just under £3m in April 2026. Outgoing chairman Kelvin Thomas noted that the transaction involved intense scrutiny.

Boardroom Realignment and Leadership Changes

The completion of the transaction triggers a significant reshuffle at the executive level. Kelvin Thomas steps down as chairman after more than a decade in the role, having initially headed the club’s takeover when the Cobblers faced a winding-up petition in 2015. Despite stepping down as chairman, Thomas, Bower, and Le Quesne remain on board as shareholders and directors.

Stepping into the leadership framework, SAC’s Joao Xavier and Tim Chamberlain assume the roles of co-chairmen, while Alexandre Pato joins the board as a director. Chief executive officer James Whiting and supporters’ representative Tom Cliffe retain their seats on the board. Conversely, Jim Rosenthal and Mike Wailing depart from the board to become associate directors.

Future Outlook and Investment Integration

With regulatory hurdles cleared, the ownership group moves toward finalizing the remaining documentation and investment details. Kelvin Thomas expressed optimism regarding the incoming group’s diverse skill set and international ties.

As the club transitions into this new era under SAC, the focus shifts to maintaining fiscal stability while integrating international expertise into the League Two campaign.
