Alexandr Wang on Mark Zuckerberg’s Long WhatsApp DMs and Prioritization
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg drives his artificial intelligence overhaul through exceptionally long, rapid-fire WhatsApp messages delivered at a relentless pace. The operational style was revealed on Sunday by Scale AI founder Alexandr Wang during an interview with David Senra, offering an inside look at how the chief executive manages a tightly restricted schedule.
The Mechanics of Zuckerberg’s Executive Communication
Before joining Meta to help lead its AI agent efforts, Wang occasionally asked Zuckerberg for advice. The replies proved unexpectedly detailed. Wang recalled wondering how the chief executive found the time to write such extensive messages.
Wang later concluded that Zuckerberg possesses an unusual capacity for writing rigorous responses quickly. That high-speed output underpins a tightly managed schedule. Balancing leadership, family, and other commitments requires ruthless time prioritization.
From Occasional Contacts to a Fast-Track Deal
The working relationship evolved significantly over several years. An initial introduction around 2021 or 2022 took roughly a year to lead to a first meeting. At that stage, the two spoke only about once every six months.
That distance evaporated as Meta confronted shortcomings in its Llama 4 AI model and the rising stakes of competition against rivals such as OpenAI and Anthropic. Zuckerberg called Wang to ask what Meta should do next and how it should frame its artificial intelligence strategy.
Inside Meta’s Flatter Research Organization
Those conversations expanded rapidly. Within five or six weeks of Zuckerberg’s initial outreach, Meta announced a deal to take a 49% stake in Scale AI. Wang and several colleagues subsequently moved to Meta.
Wang now operates as a key figure in Meta’s attempt to rebuild its artificial intelligence organization around a smaller, flatter group of top researchers. Zuckerberg’s willingness to seek feedback from prominent entrepreneurs remains a notable trait for a leader who has run Meta for more than two decades.
