Alex Gibney Releases Musk Documentary Amid Legal Threats and Hurdles

Alex Gibney Releases Musk Documentary Amid Legal Threats and Hurdles

October 13, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Filmmaker Alex Gibney’s four-hour documentary Musk arrives alongside legal threats and advertising hurdles across major social platforms, the-independent.com reported.

Public Insults and Distribution Hurdles

When the documentary was first announced three years ago, Musk dismissed the project as a hit piece. Over the past few weeks, Musk utilized X to characterize Gibney as lacking all credibility, labeling him an idiot, an awful individual, a crackpot wearing a tinfoil hat, and a far-left apologist. Following the feature’s debut at the Venice Film Festival last month, Musk posted that dog feces are worth more respect than Gibney. According to reports, the wealthiest person in the world has not watched the movie and declined to provide a statement when contacted by The Associated Press.

The project faced resistance beyond public insult trading. Distributor Bleecker Street struggled to run paid promotions across major social platforms. By September 25, X, TikTok, Meta, and YouTube had refused advertisements. Meta and YouTube later changed position, stating the material had been flagged for political content. As legal warnings arrived from Musk’s attorneys, Gibney fought back in public by frequently publishing updates on X through both his primary account and a new profile called @muskfilmfacts, which was built to challenge false claims and shine a light on possible suppression of material.

Inside the Four-Hour Chronicle and Its Revelations

The documentary is an exhaustive chronicle of the rise of Elon Musk, detailing the tech billionaire behind Tesla, SpaceX, and Neuralink, usatoday.com reported. The movie grimly outlines a multitude of fatalities connected to Tesla’s driver-assistance technology, asserting that Musk has been untruthful about the limitations and performance of these systems. Through interviews with journalists, former associates, and romantic partners, the movie also claims that Musk courted right-wing politicians around the globe to get business incentives for Tesla and SpaceX.

The narrative follows Musk’s rise from early Silicon Valley ventures to SpaceX, Tesla, and DOGE, the Department of Government Efficiency that overhauled federal staffing last year. The four-hour run time includes on-camera interviews with Musk’s relatives, including his father Errol Musk, his first wife Justine Musk, and Ashley St. Clair, the mother of one of his children, alongside journalists, former colleagues, business associates, and government officials.

According to usatoday.com, Justine Musk shared that throughout their eight-year marriage, Elon would often make her feel insignificant and talk down to her like she was an employee. Justine told Gibney she learned the term gaslighting through her relationship with Elon, recalling that at their wedding dance he told her he was the alpha in the relationship.

Ashley St. Clair tells Gibney in the documentary that Musk went pretty hardcore Trump, stating that compared to Joe Biden, Trump is a much easier president to buy. St. Clair remembers texting with Musk on the night of the 2024 presidential election, saying she thought they were going to win, to which Musk replied that he knew that hours before because they had the best real-time data.

Film Warns of Surveillance and Questions HBO Broadcast

The documentary contends that Musk gained extraordinary reach into private American information via his purchase of X in 2022 alongside his oversight of DOGE, an entity that deployed numerous junior employees to cut budgets across federal departments. AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton voices anxieties in the film regarding Musk’s profound government connections and the risk that his technology could be employed for tracking citizens or backroom deals.

Questions have also emerged regarding whether Musk will air on HBO as originally intended following the Skydance merger, which combined Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery. David Ellison, chief executive of the newly formed company, is the son of Larry Ellison, a close friend of Musk. Gibney noted in an interview with the Associated Press that he acknowledges the transactional nature of the current political and media landscape.

With Musk declining to be interviewed, the filmmakers adopted an unconventional strategy by creating a computer-generated avatar of Musk that speaks directly to the camera, using authentic audio drawn from public speeches and interview recordings synced with artificial intelligence. A key point of contention centers on text messages provided by St. Clair in which Musk expresses optimism regarding Trump’s political prospects and writes that he has 10,000 lasers in space right now. Musk’s supporters and legal team have seized on the inclusion to discredit the film, alleging it promotes unfounded conspiracy theories regarding SpaceX’s Starlink satellites interfering in the election, though the documentary simply presents the text messages for viewers to draw their own conclusions.
