Alex Eala: From Philippines Teen to Tennis Rising Star at Miami Open

March 21, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

MIAMI – Alex Eala continued her remarkable ascent in professional tennis, battling through a grueling three-hour and 20-minute match against Germany’s Laura Siegemund to reach the third round of the Miami Open on Thursday. The 20-year-old Filipina won 6-7(6), 6-3, 6-3, demonstrating the tenacity that has quickly made her a fan favorite and a source of national pride.

Eala’s return to the Miami Open marks a pivotal moment in her career. It was at this tournament last year, entering as a wildcard, that she launched a stunning run that included victories over Grand Slam champions Jelena Ostapenko and Madison Keys, before an injury to Paula Badosa advanced her to the quarterfinals. There, she stunned Iga Świątek, a dominant force in women’s tennis, to reach the semifinals.

“The Miami Open last year was the obvious turning point in my career,” Eala said after her victory over Siegemund, as reported by ESPN.ph. “But aside from that, I think it’s really gone step by step.”

Now ranked No. 29 in the world, Eala has become more than just a tennis player. she’s a symbol for the Philippines, an archipelago of over 115 million people. Her success resonates deeply within a nation eager to notice its athletes compete on the global stage. “She is already being treated like a multiple Grand Slam winner,” said Dyan Castillejo, a sports broadcaster in the Philippines who has followed Eala’s career since her childhood, in an interview with The New York Times.

Castillejo, who herself competed in tennis and tracked Eala’s early success after her win at Les Petits As at age 12, noted the dramatic shift in national interest in the sport. “Every move. Every video. Every win. Every loss. Every word she says people are like, ‘Are you following it?’” she said. The surge in popularity has even led to a scarcity of available tennis courts in the Philippines, as aspiring players seek to emulate Eala’s success.

Eala’s impact extends beyond the court. Her ability to connect with fans, often speaking to them in Tagalog, has further solidified her status as a people’s champion. Her recent performances, including a dramatic upset of Clara Tauson at the U.S. Open – prevailing 13-11 in the final-set tiebreak with a packed Grandstand filled with Filipino fans – and a reach-from-behind victory over Dayana Yastremska at Indian Wells, demonstrate her growing ability to thrive under pressure.

The support she receives from the Filipino diaspora is a significant factor in her success. “It means the world to have this community behind me in such a prestigious tournament,” Eala said after her win over Yastremska. “For them to make the effort to stay up late and stay in the cold and cheer me on, so it really added to the feelings and the emotions after the match.”

Despite the physical toll of the tour – “Every week, some part of her body hurts in a way it hadn’t before,” according to The New York Times – Eala remains focused on continuous improvement. She is currently working to add power to her serve while navigating the challenges of defending ranking points earned during her breakthrough 2025 season.

Eala’s next challenge in Miami could be a rematch against Iga Świątek. The possibility looms as she continues her tournament run, facing the demands of defending her points from last year’s impressive performance. “I’ve been defending points for as long as I’ve been competing,” Eala said. “Whether I lose first round or whether I win the whole thing, it’s OK. If I don’t secure them now, I’ll get them in another tournament.”
