Alex Cora Takes the Helm as Spokesperson for Puerto Rico Health Future Foundation

Former Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora stepped behind a podium on Thursday to assume a new role as spokesperson for the Fundación para el Futuro de la Salud, marking a high-profile effort to stem the brain drain of medical professionals leaving Puerto Rico.

Building a Championship Roster for Island Healthcare

The organization, established two years ago, provides grants and financial aid to help Puerto Rican doctors complete their professional training and remain on the island to practice. Cora compared the foundation’s mission to assembling a winning baseball team. The strategy relies heavily on developing talent, teamwork, and retaining homegrown professionals.

Here I am present. And all the situations I have lived through have opened my eyes.

Cora stated during the press conference, noting that he has spent the past year living in Puerto Rico.

The initiative addresses an urgent demographic challenge across the island. According to data provided by the foundation, half of Puerto Rico’s roughly 9,800 active physicians are three years or less away from turning 65.

Financial Impact and Expansion of the Physician Grant Program

During its first two years of operations, the foundation has invested approximately $850,000 in economic aid for medical residents and specialists. The foundation’s current second class consists of 17 beneficiaries selected from 30 applicants, representing a financial injection of about $400,000, according to Marín Ramos. This follows an initial cohort of 12 doctors.

The cost of supporting medical talent varies significantly depending on the stage of training. Marín Ramos detailed that supporting a medical resident inside Puerto Rico runs $12,000 annually. Meanwhile, backing a specialist who must complete training in the United States under a binding agreement to return to the island costs between $50,000 and $60,000 per year.

Using Major League Experience for Social Impact

The press conference mirrored a major league manager introduction, complete with the presentation of a custom foundation jersey and cap, with Cora standing alongside board member Dr. José Novoa.

Cora previously led the Boston Red Sox to a World Series title in 2018 and spearheaded humanitarian relief efforts for Puerto Rico following Hurricane María in 2017.
