Alejandro Gomes: Su decisión sobre qué selección nacional representar y su sueño del Balón de Oro

March 24, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Venezuelan-born footballer Alejandro Gomes has reaffirmed his current intention to represent England internationally, even as leaving the door open to potentially playing for Venezuela or Portugal in the future. The Olympique Lyon forward stated his ambition during a post-match press conference following Annecy FC’s victory over Saint-Étienne in Ligue 2, according to reports.

“My dream is to play for a national team. I have three nationalities with which I could play. I still don’t know which one it will be, but at the moment I am with England. I hope to achieve it with England, although in the future, who knows what could happen,” Gomes said.

Gomes acknowledged the possibility of a change in allegiance, stating, “It could change, you never know. But I want to play with a national team.” He also expressed his broader career aspirations, including playing in the Champions League and, winning the Ballon d’Or.

The 18-year-vintage, born in Caracas on March 10, 2008, currently plays for FC Annecy on loan from Olympique Lyon. He has represented the youth teams of Venezuela, Portugal, and England, scoring four goals in three appearances for England’s Under-17 side during the recent European Championship, despite his team’s elimination in the group stage. He previously played for Southampton and Eastleigh in England, according to Transfermarkt.

Gomes is eligible to play for all three nations due to his birth in Venezuela and his British and Portuguese citizenship. He debuted professionally for Olympique Lyonnais in Ligue 1 in May 2025, having joined the club’s academy in 2024. Prior to that, he was described as “one of the best forwards in England of his age” while with Southampton.

According to reports, Gomes played in friendly matches for Venezuela’s national team against Turkey and Japan approximately two years ago and also represented Portugal at the youth level, scoring one goal and providing three assists. However, he has become increasingly integrated with the England youth setup.

FIFA regulations stipulate that a player can switch national teams if they have not played a competitive match for their initial nation. Once a player has participated in an official match for one country, they are generally bound to that nation, unless specific exceptions apply. As of March 24, 2026, Gomes has not yet been capped at the senior international level.
