MacBook users are increasingly turning to third-party applications like AlDente to manage battery health, a practice spurred by concerns over lithium-ion battery degradation. The app allows users to limit the maximum charging percentage of their MacBook’s battery, a feature designed to extend its lifespan.
While Apple’s built-in battery health management tools exist, AlDente offers a greater degree of user control. Developed by AppHouseKitchen, the application enables users to set custom charge limits, going beyond the standard optimizations offered by macOS. Users can set limits anywhere between 20 and 100 percent, according to information on the developer’s GitHub page.
The core principle behind AlDente’s functionality stems from the understanding that lithium-ion batteries perform optimally when maintained within a specific charge range – typically between 20 and 80 percent. Keeping a battery consistently at 100% can accelerate its degradation over time. AlDente’s Charge Limiter feature directly addresses this issue by preventing overcharging.
Beyond the Charge Limiter, AlDente’s Pro version includes additional features such as Heat Protection, which halts charging when the battery temperature becomes excessively high, and Calibration Mode, designed to maintain accurate battery percentage readings. A Discharge mode allows a MacBook to run solely on battery power even when plugged in, facilitating active battery discharge to a healthier percentage.
Early user reports, such as those shared on Reddit, suggest that AlDente can be effective in preserving battery health. One user reported maintaining 96% battery health with 171 charge cycles on an M2 Max MacBook while using the application. However, the same user cautioned that improper configuration could potentially accelerate battery aging.
The app’s popularity reflects a growing awareness among MacBook owners of the importance of proactive battery management. While Apple has implemented its own battery health features, AlDente provides a more granular level of control, appealing to users who wish to actively manage their device’s power performance. The availability of AlDente Pro on Setapp, a subscription service for Mac applications, further expands its accessibility.
AlDente’s Stats feature provides detailed insights into a MacBook’s battery and power health, displaying key sensor data such as maximum battery capacity, temperature, and system load. The application currently supports macOS 11 Big Sur and later versions, with a list of compatible MacBook models available on the developer’s FAQ page.
