Sprints, Mariah Carey & Perrie Lead a Strong Week for New Music
Dublin-formed rock band Sprints deliver a confident and urgent second album, All That Is Over, alongside new releases from pop icons Mariah Carey and Perrie, marking a diverse and compelling week for music fans. The albums arrive amid a shifting landscape for the music industry, where established artists continue to innovate and emerging acts like Sprints gain traction through critical acclaim and a growing fanbase.
Sprints’ All That is Over sees the four-piece – featuring Karla Chubb on vocals and guitar, alongside Zac Stephenson – building on the promise of their debut Letter to Self. The album grapples with the band’s rising profile against a backdrop of modern anxieties,as Chubb explores themes of desire, misogyny, and the power of voice. As The Autonomous‘s Roisin O’Connor notes, the album’s opening track, “Abandon,” immediately sets a bleak tone with lyrics like “Abandon all hope, hang the rope/ Don’t you recognize my face no more?”
Tracks like “To the Bone” showcase the band’s dynamic range, moving from poetic introspection to “muscular and wild-eyed” energy. “Need” offers a “witty, sharp-tongued maelstrom” confronting misogyny, with Chubb demanding, “What would you like me to be?” O’Connor highlights the album’s intelligence and volume, concluding that Sprints are “smarter, and louder, than ever before.” All That Is Over receives a four-star rating from The Independent.
