okotoks, Alberta – Gymnastics enthusiasts are in for a treat as the annual Mountain Magic Invitational (MMI) hosted by Mountain Shadows Gymnastics Club, unfolds at the Okotoks Recreation Centre. from May 1-4, over 900 athletes from across Alberta will showcase their skills in vault, floor, beam, and bars.
A Legacy of Excellence
The mountain Magic Invitational has grown significantly since its inception. What started as a small gathering has blossomed into one of the largest gymnastics meets in Alberta. Jim mcluskey, owner and head coach of mountain Shadows, recalls the humble beginnings: It’s been around almost provided that the club has been. I believe we started the meet off at 150 (athletes) so it’s grown to be the largest meet in Alberta now.

The success of the MMI is attributed to the dedication of the Mountain Shadows community. McLuskey emphasizes the commitment to excellence in every aspect of the event: We’re very proud of it, the parents put a great deal of time into it because our rule is if we’re going to do something this big then we’re going to do every section of it well. Weather it’s the food, the awards, everything is just top of the line, and I think that’s why we draw 900 kids.
Team Spirit
Adding a unique dimension to the competition, the MMI has incorporated a team component, mirroring the format seen at the NCAA level. This provides young gymnasts with a taste of collegiate-style competition, a rarity in youth gymnastics in Canada.
