Veteran Tennis Player Albert Ramos Announces Retirement After 18-Year Career
Valencia, Spain – Albert Ramos, 37, has officially retired from professional tennis following a quarterfinal loss to Jan Choinski at the Valencia Challenger this week. The match marked the end of a distinguished career characterized by grit, dedication, and notable victories against some of the sport’s biggest names.
Ramos, a clay-court specialist, reached a career-high ranking of No. 17 and leaves the tour with a record of 281 ATP victories and 333 defeats. He was the active player with the most wins on clay at the time of his retirement, boasting an impressive 200 victories – significantly ahead of compatriot Pablo Carreño’s 116.
Throughout his career, Ramos secured four ATP titles, all on clay: Bastad (2016), Gstaad (2019), Estoril (2021), and Córdoba (2022).He also reached seven additional ATP finals, including one on hard court in Chengdu in 2016. Beyond the main tour, Ramos excelled on the ATP Challenger circuit, claiming eight titles.
Perhaps his most memorable win came against Roger Federer in Shanghai during the 2015 season, a victory achieved on fast courts where Ramos was considered an underdog. In 2017, he reached the pinnacle of his career, reaching the final of the Monte Carlo Masters, where he defeated then-world No. 1 Andy Murray en route to the championship match. He also reached the quarterfinals of Roland Garros in 2016.
This year, Ramos enjoyed a final appearance at roland Garros, qualifying for the main draw after defeating Andrea Collarini, before facing Casper Ruud.
“Frist of all, thank you for your support during the match. It has been a pleasure to play here. Thanks also to the tournament for its hospitality, to Pablo (Andújar). I am happy to have competed here in what was my last match,” Ramos said following his final match in Valencia, adding, “and a little sad, obviously, because it’s been many years doing this and it’s over, but calm and with my head held high for having given it my all.”
