Veteran Tennis Player Albert Ramos Announces Retirement After 18-Year Career

Valencia, Spain⁣ – Albert Ramos, 37, has‌ officially ‌retired from professional tennis following a quarterfinal loss⁣ to Jan ⁣Choinski ⁤at ⁢the Valencia Challenger this ‍week. The match marked ⁣the‌ end of a distinguished career characterized by grit,‌ dedication, and notable victories against some of‍ the sport’s biggest names.

Ramos, ‌a clay-court specialist, reached a career-high⁤ ranking of ‌No. 17 and leaves the tour with a record of 281 ATP victories ‌and 333 defeats. He was the ⁤active player with the most wins on clay at the time of his retirement, boasting an impressive 200 victories⁤ – significantly ahead of compatriot Pablo Carreño’s 116.

Throughout his career,⁤ Ramos secured four‌ ATP titles, all on clay:⁣ Bastad (2016), Gstaad (2019), Estoril (2021), ⁢and⁤ Córdoba ⁣(2022).He also reached seven ⁤additional ATP finals, including one on hard ⁢court in Chengdu in 2016. Beyond the main tour, Ramos ⁤excelled on the ATP Challenger circuit, claiming eight ‍titles.

Perhaps his most memorable win came against⁤ Roger Federer in Shanghai during ​the 2015 ⁢season, a victory achieved on⁣ fast​ courts‍ where⁣ Ramos⁤ was ‌considered an underdog. In ‍2017, he reached the pinnacle of his ⁤career, reaching the final ‌of the⁣ Monte Carlo‍ Masters, where he defeated then-world No. 1 Andy Murray en route to the championship match. He also ‌reached​ the quarterfinals of Roland Garros in 2016.

This year, Ramos enjoyed a ‍final appearance at roland Garros, qualifying ⁤for ⁣the main‍ draw after defeating Andrea Collarini, before facing Casper Ruud.

“Frist of⁢ all, thank you for your support during the match. It has been a pleasure to play ​here. Thanks also to the tournament for its hospitality, ⁢to Pablo (Andújar). I am happy to​ have competed here ⁤in what was my last match,” Ramos said following his final match ​in Valencia, adding, “and a little‌ sad, obviously, because ⁢it’s been many years doing this and it’s over, but ‍calm and with my‌ head held high for having given‌ it my all.”
