Albenga police remove mattresses and vegetation in cleanup operations

November 7, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

Mattresses and Overgrown Reeds Removed in Albenga Urban Cleanup Operations

Mattresses, makeshift sleeping quarters, and two abandoned cars were removed from two separate zones in Albenga during municipal cleanup operations. The local police targeted the unfinished residential buildings on via Carloforte and a commercial sector near viale Martiri della Foce to restore public safety, hygiene, and urban order. The local police department noted that the site is subject to periodic monitoring. A few days prior, the newly formed «Pontelungo Viva» committee had highlighted the problems in the area.

  • Municipal cleanup operations in Albenga addressed environmental and public hygiene hazards involving abandoned property and uncontrolled vegetation growth.
  • Stagnant water found in the basement levels of the unfinished via Carloforte complex previously required larvicide treatment against mosquitoes in August 2025.
  • Local authorities plan to conduct a complete sanitation sweep of the entire sector in the coming days.

Clearing Informal Shelters on via Carloforte

The first operation focused on the unfinished housing blocks along via Carloforte, where officers entered the property alongside waste management provider Sat to clear out mattresses and makeshift bedding materials. The local police department monitors the site on a periodic basis. These buildings have remained incomplete following an interrupted construction project initiated in the early 2000s, landing the property in a protracted legal dispute involving bankruptcies, seizures, and appeals. Rulings from the Genoa Court of Appeal subsequently recognized pre-existing mortgage claims and restored ownership to private entities, reducing municipal control over the site after local officials had secured and later returned €450,000 intended for redevelopment.

Clearing Overgrown Vegetation Near Viale Martiri della Foce

A second operation took place in the morning around the Self commercial area on viale Martiri della Foce, where crews cut down dense reeds and uncontrolled vegetation obstructing visibility. Municipal authorities stated that the overgrowth concealed portions of the lot, creating potential environments for illicit activities such as drug distribution alongside unregulated waste dumping. According to the municipality, the vegetation concealed certain sections of the area that could lend themselves to illicit activities, including drug dealing, as well as the uncontrolled abandonment of waste. Officers removed two abandoned motor vehicles during the same intervention. Thanks to these operations, it was possible to restore better visibility and usability of the spaces, returning greater safety and decorum to the zone, and the municipality announced that a complete cleaning of the entire area will be carried out in the coming days.
