Albany State and Phoebe Putney Launch Nursing Pathway
Albany State University and Phoebe Putney Health System launched a joint nursing pathway providing $10,000 in student financial support and a direct employment agreement starting in January 2027. The initiative targets working adults enrolled in the university’s evening Associate of Science in Nursing track in Southwest Georgia.
Evening Schedule Accommodates Working Adults
The program utilizes Albany State’s existing evening track structure, which has operated for more than a decade to accommodate daytime job responsibilities and personal schedules. Students accepted into the expanded pathway receive $10,000 from Phoebe Putney Health System while completing their coursework. In exchange, participants sign a two-year employment agreement to work for the health system following their graduation and licensure.
Students gain access to structured mentoring, clinical training opportunities, and advanced simulation experiences. Albany State provides academic tutoring and success coaching, while Phoebe contributes clinical learning placements and nurse externship opportunities. Registered nurse employment is projected to grow 5% from 2024 to 2034, outpacing the average growth rate for all occupations nationwide.
Health System Funding Expands Faculty Capacity
To support increased enrollment and clinical instruction, Phoebe Putney Health System is funding four new personnel positions at the university. The funding covers one full-time faculty member, one part-time faculty member, and two clinical instructors. Albany State President Robert Scott stated that the collaboration aligns institutional missions around regional workforce needs. Phoebe Putney Health System President and CEO Scott Steiner noted that the agreement strengthens the local healthcare pipeline while creating career opportunities for community members.
Albany State University holds historical significance as the first Historically Black College and University in Georgia to establish a nursing program. The institution currently offers multiple academic pathways, including traditional and hybrid associate degrees, generic and accelerated bachelor’s degrees, an RN-to-BSN program, a healthcare professional-to-RN bridge, and master’s degree concentrations in nurse practitioner, nurse educator, and nursing informatics.
