Alabama Names Keelon Russell Starting Quarterback for 2026 Season

August 23, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Sophomore Keelon Russell has won the rigorous quarterback competition to be named Alabama’s starting quarterback for the 2026 season, according to reports from ESPN’s Pete Thamel and Yea Alabama, the university’s Name, Image, and Likeness collective. Russell beat out senior Austin Mack following an intensive offseason battle under head coach Kalen DeBoer.

The Offseason Battle Between Russell and Mack

The competition between Russell and Mack stretched through the entire offseason, with Kalen DeBoer and offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb noting repeatedly that neither player managed to create definitive separation before or after the first fall scrimmage. The second fall scrimmage took place at Bryant-Denny Stadium on August 20. Even then, DeBoer declined to name a leader publicly, stating that the coaching staff could comfortably proceed with either athlete.

Rumors regarding Russell’s standing circulated heavily in the weeks leading up to the official announcement. The decision solidifies the sophomore as the primary signal-caller for Week 1, resolving months of speculation across the program.

Evaluating Russell’s Path to QB1

Russell enters the starting role with limited collegiate game experience, having appeared in just two blowouts during the previous season. In those outings, he completed 11 of 15 pass attempts for 143 yards and two touchdowns. High expectations accompanied his arrival in Tuscaloasa following a prolific high school career at Duncanville, Texas, where he earned the 2025 Gatorade National High School Player of the Year honor.

During the 2024-25 high school campaign, Russell threw for 3,652 yards, recording 52 touchdowns against only two interceptions while maintaining a 71.5 completion percentage. He arrived as the highest-rated prospect of the Kalen DeBoer era, earning a five-star ranking and the designation of the No. 2 overall recruit in the class of 2025.

Early hurdles in the collegiate system required mechanical and mental adjustments. During an earlier three-man race, Russell was temporarily challenged regarding his command in the huddle. Addressing that aspect of his development, DeBoer noted on April 3 that Russell had progressed to the point where he no longer needed to actively think through play calls. During the A-Day spring scrimmage on April 11, Russell completed 21 of 33 passes for 242 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception, while Mack completed 6 of 12 passes for 101 yards, a touchdown, and an interception while managing minor physical limitations.
