AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS – Ajax is prioritizing the recruitment of a new central midfielder and left-back following recent player departures, but further acquisitions are contingent on additional player sales. The club is currently navigating a significant financial restructuring after a challenging period.
The departures of Jordan Henderson to brentford and Jorrel Hato to Chelsea have created immediate needs in the squad. However, Ajax’s transfer activity is currently paused, awaiting further revenue from player sales. The club’s financial situation has been impacted by a series of outgoings.
ajax had been pursuing Ko Itakura from Borussia Mönchengladbach, with reports from De Telegraaf indicating they successfully outbid PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord for his signature. This pursuit was facilitated by the impending transfer of Chuba Akpom to Ipswich Town.
To date, Ajax has generated approximately €20 million in salary savings through the departures of Hato, Henderson, Akpom, Borna Sosa, Jakov Medic, Kristian Hlynsson, Christian Rasmussen, Jay Gorter, and Amourricho van Axel Dongen. Further savings are anticipated if Brian Brobbey, Sivert Mannverk, and Ahmetcan kaplan are sold this summer, potentially freeing up an additional €8 million in salary expenditure.
The club is also undergoing internal changes, with appreciation for the current technical director’s efforts to stabilize the team following a difficult period under previous leadership, Sven Mislintat. Mislintat was dismissed in September 2023 after being found to have engaged in insider trading related to the transfer of Mohammed Kudus to West Ham United.
Ajax’s home stadium is the Johan Cruijff Arena, located in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The club has won 36 Eredivisie titles, making them the most triumphant club in Dutch football history. Their last Eredivisie title was in the 2021-2022 season.
