AI Success: Harnessing Frontline Employee Insights

February 17, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

A recent global study of 8,200 frontline workers revealed a significant gap in the adoption of artificial intelligence tools between those in hourly roles and salaried information workers, despite similar levels of access. The findings, commissioned by UKG and Workplace Intelligence and conducted by Walr, highlight unique challenges faced by frontline employees in integrating AI into their daily workflows.

While AI is increasingly touted for its potential to transform workplaces, the report indicates that frontline workers – often deskless and paid hourly – experience this transformation differently than their salaried counterparts. The study found that frontline workers are less likely to report optimistic sentiment towards AI, perceive a clear value proposition for organizational investment in the technology, or realize a personal benefit from its use. In some cases, this sentiment gap reached 22 percent.

Researchers identified ineffective training and uncertainty about how to properly integrate AI into existing workflows as key barriers to adoption among frontline employees. This contrasts with information workers, who generally demonstrate a greater understanding of AI’s potential and a smoother integration process. The Microsoft Viva Blog, which first reported on the study, noted that access to AI tools was comparable across both groups, suggesting the issue isn’t availability, but rather effective implementation and support.

The findings align with broader research examining the psychological responses of frontline employees to AI integration. A study published in ScienceDirect emphasizes the demand to systematically review these responses and develop a conceptual framework for understanding the impact of AI on this workforce segment. The study notes that understanding these psychological responses is crucial for successful AI implementation.

Experts suggest that operational intelligence – AI systems that connect frontline data across various organizational functions, including hiring, scheduling, and performance – holds significant promise. The World Economic Forum has highlighted this potential, noting that such systems can learn and improve continuously. However, realizing this potential requires addressing the specific challenges faced by frontline workers, including providing targeted training and clear guidance on how to utilize AI tools effectively.

Microsoft’s research indicates that the differing experiences between information and frontline workers are becoming increasingly apparent as AI integration expands. The company’s research team is continuing to explore the nuances of AI adoption across different job types and industries, with a focus on optimizing investments in the technology. As of February 17, 2026, UKG has not released a follow-up report detailing specific strategies for bridging the AI adoption gap identified in the 2025 study.
