The United States power grid faces a projected 100 GW electricity shortfall within the next four years, according to Bank of America data cited by TechRadar, driven by artificial intelligence infrastructure and electrification trends. To combat this constraint, a software platform developed by GridCARE claims it can unlock approximately 300 gigawatts of hidden transmission capacity across existing infrastructure within three to five years by running quadrillions of simulations.
A Demand Spike Collides with Supply Gaps
America’s electricity landscape is colliding with a demand spike. Analysts project at least 230 GW of new power demand will emerge between 2026 and 2030 alone. During that same window, utilities are expected to add only 93 GW of new supply capacity, according to data from Bank of America cited by TechRadar. That widening gap has intensified pressure on operators who are racing to find faster alternatives to multi-year transmission line builds.
The Limitations of Traditional Grid Planning
Traditional grid planning has historically relied on conservative assumptions designed to account for multiple simultaneous equipment failures at once. While this approach prioritizes reliability during emergencies, it leaves substantial portions of the transmission network underused for most of the calendar year. Building new substations and transmission corridors involves lengthy regulatory hurdles and high capital costs, meaning physical upgrades may struggle to keep pace before 2030.
Simulations and Real-Time Asset Visibility
GridCARE, led by founder and CEO Amit Narayan, argues that advanced software can bypass these physical delays. Rather than laying new physical cables, the platform analyzes how the grid actually operates in real time. By running quadrillions of simulations to model actual grid behavior instead of relying strictly on worst-case planning scenarios, utilities gain a clearer picture of available headroom across existing assets.
Unlocking Overlooked Headroom for Energy Projects
Jigar Shah—a US entrepreneur and former director of the Department of Energy’s Loan Programs Office—recently discussed the technology while hosting the “Energy Empire” podcast. Narayan explained that the 300 GW figure highlights capacity previously ignored by conventional planning approaches for years. Recovering even a fraction of that hidden headroom could meaningfully ease constraints facing data center developers and clean energy projects that are currently stuck waiting in grid interconnection queues.
Adoption Hurdles and Institutional Caution
Despite the potential benefits, hurdles remain for widespread adoption. No independent testing or verification has yet confirmed the software’s claims about the extent of its capabilities. Furthermore, utility operators have historically been cautious about departing from conservative planning standards. Yet, the scale of the projected shortfall—combined with slow transmission buildout timelines—may push operators toward software-based alternatives sooner than expected.
