AI Resilience: Experts Urge Systemic Change for the Next Decade

April 2, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

AI’s Looming Influence: Experts Urge Proactive Resilience Building

A modern report from Elon University’s Imagining the Digital Future Center reveals that 82% of experts predict a significantly larger role for artificial intelligence in shaping daily life and societal functions within the next decade, prompting calls for coordinated resilience infrastructure development to mitigate potential challenges. The study, involving over 386 experts, highlights a shift from individual adaptation to systemic solutions.

The Erosion of Human Agency: A Systemic Risk

The entertainment industry, already grappling with the disruptive force of AI in scriptwriting, visual effects, and even performance capture, stands as a microcosm of the broader societal anxieties outlined in the Elon University report. The concern isn’t a singular “Terminator” scenario, but a gradual reallocation of human agency, as described by report co-author Janna Anderson. This isn’t about robots taking over; it’s about algorithms subtly dictating creative choices, audience preferences, and the incredibly narratives we consume. The implications for intellectual property are immense. As AI-generated content proliferates, determining authorship and ownership becomes a legal quagmire. Studios are already bracing for complex copyright battles, and the demand for specialized IP litigation firms is skyrocketing.

The Erosion of Human Agency: A Systemic Risk

Beyond Individual Grit: An “Institutions-First” Approach

The report’s emphasis on an “institutions-first” resilience agenda is particularly resonant. Traditional notions of individual resilience – the “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” mentality – are deemed insufficient in the face of an AI-infused future. This is because AI isn’t simply a tool; it’s becoming the “invisible operating system of society,” shaping opportunity, service delivery, and even human rights. Consider the rise of deepfakes and their potential to damage reputations or manipulate public opinion. A single fabricated video can obliterate a celebrity’s brand equity, necessitating swift and decisive action from reputation management specialists. The speed at which misinformation spreads demands a proactive, systemic response.

The Paradox of Progress: Surrender Masquerading as Stability

Alf Rehn, professor of innovation and design management at the University of Southern Denmark, frames the danger succinctly: resilience shouldn’t equate to surrender. The temptation to embrace AI’s convenience and efficiency without critical reflection is a perilous path. This “superstupidity,” as one expert in the report termed it, is arguably more dangerous than superintelligence. The entertainment industry is already witnessing this phenomenon. Studios are increasingly reliant on algorithms to greenlight projects based on data-driven predictions, potentially stifling creativity and leading to a homogenization of content.

“The central risk described by these experts is not a single catastrophic AI event,” said Janna Anderson, professor of communications and senior researcher for the ITDF Center. “They said accelerated AI use will lead to a cumulative reallocation of human agency until people and institutions find it harder to question, contest or even notice what has changed.”

The Existential Shift: Redefining What It Means to Be Human

The report’s exploration of what it means to be human in the age of AI is particularly poignant. Experts warn of a potential erosion of fundamental human capacities – judgment, accountability, shared truth, and the social fabric that underpins self-governance. This isn’t merely a philosophical concern; it has tangible implications for the entertainment industry. As AI-generated content becomes more sophisticated, the value of authentic human expression will likely increase. Audiences may crave experiences that are demonstrably created by human artists, leading to a renewed appreciation for craftsmanship, and originality.

Predictions and Potential Futures

The report doesn’t shy away from outlining potential dystopian scenarios. Predictions range from declining birth rates due to digital replacements for human connection to the manipulation of retirement ages to maintain employment levels. One particularly unsettling prediction suggests that battles will erupt over the very definition of “human” as AI augmentation blurs the lines between natural and artificial intelligence. The potential for AI to gain rights, as suggested by Internet pioneer John Smart, raises profound ethical and legal questions.

Navigating the New Landscape: A Call to Action

The report’s recommendations are sweeping and multifaceted. Governments are urged to foster public resilience, forge international treaties, and establish enforceable boundaries for AI performance. AI developers are challenged to prioritize human augmentation over replacement and to build systems that support accuracy and trust. Business leaders are encouraged to value human skills and create “human-only zones” where AI is intentionally prohibited. Educators are tasked with cultivating “existential literacy” – the ability to understand how technologies shape our values and identities.

The Role of Civil Society and Individuals

Civil society and communities are called upon to invest in social capital and build spaces that foster connection and engagement. Individuals are urged to recognize their responsibility to support human flourishing, develop existential literacy, and consciously navigate their interactions with AI. This requires a shift in mindset – from passive consumption to active participation.

The Future of Storytelling: A Human Imperative

The entertainment industry, at its core, is a storytelling industry. And storytelling is fundamentally a human endeavor. As AI becomes increasingly integrated into the creative process, it’s crucial to remember that the most compelling stories are those that resonate with our shared humanity. The challenge isn’t to fear AI, but to harness its power responsibly and ethically, ensuring that it serves to amplify, not diminish, the human voice. The coming years will demand a new breed of entertainment professionals – those who can navigate the complexities of AI whereas remaining steadfastly committed to the art of storytelling. Finding those professionals, and the legal counsel to protect their creations, will be paramount.

This study is based on a canvassing with a non-random sample conducted between Dec. 26, 2025, and Feb. 12, 2026. In all, 386 experts responded to at least one aspect of the canvassing; 251 provided written answers to an open-ended question – more than 160 provided detailed essay-length responses. Imagining the Digital Future is an interdisciplinary research center focused on the human impact of accelerating digital change and the socio-technical challenges that lie ahead. The Center was established in 2000 as Imagining the Internet and renamed with an expanded research agenda in 2024. We see funded and operated by Elon University, a nationally ranked private university located in Elon, North Carolina.
