AI Job Losses: Perplexity CEO Sees Opportunity in Entrepreneurship

March 24, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

The potential for widespread job displacement due to artificial intelligence may be offset by a surge in small business creation, according to Aravind Srinivas, CEO of AI search engine Perplexity, speaking on the “All In” podcast Monday. Srinivas suggested that rather than remaining in traditional employment, individuals could leverage AI tools to launch “mini businesses” and achieve financial independence.

“The reality is most people don’t enjoy their jobs,” Srinivas said, advocating for a shift away from conventional corporate structures. He envisions a future where individuals utilize AI to pursue entrepreneurial ventures, providing them with both financial stability and a sense of purpose. He added that these AI-fueled ventures could allow an entrepreneur to cover their expenses, maintain a high quality of life, and experience a sense of ownership, and passion.

Srinivas’s comments came during a discussion filmed at Nvidia’s GTC conference last week. The conference, held in San Jose, California, featured a panel discussion on the future of AI, with Srinivas participating alongside Jensen Huang of Nvidia, Harrison Chase of LangChain, Mira Murati of Thinking Machines, and Michael Truell of Cursor. The panel focused on the emerging concept of “open agents” – AI systems capable of independent action and task completion – rather than simply generating text, as reported by TechRepublic.

Perplexity, co-founded by Srinivas in 2022 after research roles at Google’s DeepMind and OpenAI, is currently seeking funding at a $20 billion valuation, according to Business Insider reporting from August. The company’s investors include SoftBank, Nvidia, and Jeff Bezos.

Srinivas has previously emphasized AI’s potential to democratize entrepreneurship. In a July interview with Matthew Berman, he urged individuals to prioritize learning and utilizing AI tools over passively consuming social media. He reiterated this point on the podcast, stating that new employment opportunities will arise either through displaced workers starting their own companies or by acquiring AI skills to contribute to existing ventures.

The increasing accessibility of generative AI and related tools is already fueling a rise in side hustles and small business initiatives. Business Insider reported earlier this year that individuals are utilizing AI to generate revenue through services such as creating startup pitch decks, writing children’s books, providing translation services, and crafting professional résumés.

Nvidia recently announced a global coalition, “Nemotron,” to build open AI models, including Perplexity, Mistral AI, and Thinking Machines Lab, at its GTC conference on March 17, according to Business Today. The coalition aims to foster collaboration and innovation in the development of accessible AI technologies.

Huang, during the GTC panel, described AI as a “stack” – a complex system comprised of numerous models working in concert, rather than a single product or winner-take-all scenario. Harrison Chase coined the term “harness engineering” to describe the infrastructure surrounding AI models, suggesting that the true value often lies in the systems that enable and utilize those models, not the models themselves.
