AI Detects Sepsis: How Ohio Hospitals Are Using Artificial Intelligence

March 25, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

Cleveland Clinic hospitals across Northeast Ohio are now utilizing an artificial intelligence system to accelerate sepsis detection, a potentially life-threatening condition triggered by the body’s overwhelming response to infection. The rollout, completed in March 2026, aims to identify at-risk patients hours earlier than traditional methods, according to hospital officials.

The AI platform continuously monitors patient data, including vital signs, laboratory results and medical history, searching for subtle patterns indicative of developing sepsis. Akron-based Summa Health has also implemented a similar AI-powered sepsis detection tool, as demonstrated in a recent YouTube video showcasing the technology’s application within their facilities.

Sepsis affects approximately 1.7 million Americans annually and presents a diagnostic challenge due to its varied and often nonspecific symptoms. Prompt treatment is crucial for improving patient outcomes. The system employed by Cleveland Clinic was developed in partnership with Bayesian Health, a private healthcare firm.

Dr. James Morrison, an emergency physician at Cleveland Clinic, emphasized that the AI is intended to augment, not replace, the expertise of clinicians. “This isn’t about AI solving sepsis,” he stated. “It’s about helping the clinicians recognize sepsis and intervene in a timely manner.” Pilot programs of the AI tool demonstrated an increased rate of sepsis case identification alongside a reduction in false alarms.

The AI system operates in the background, alerting healthcare providers when a patient exhibits indicators suggesting a potential risk of sepsis. According to the Clinic, in some instances, the AI flagged concerning patterns hours before they would have been detected through conventional monitoring techniques.

Despite the potential benefits, Dr. Morrison expressed concerns regarding over-reliance on the technology and the possibility of errors or inherent biases within the system. He questioned the potential impact on clinicians’ diagnostic skills, asking, “And also if everything happens by the AI, and clinicians’ ability to detect (sepsis) atrophies, what happens if the AI isn’t there?”

Currently, the AI tool is integrated as one component of the clinical decision-making process, with physicians retaining primary responsibility for patient care. Cleveland Clinic plans to continue closely monitoring and refining the system’s performance over time. The Clinic began expanding the utilize of Bayesian Health’s AI sepsis detection software in October 2025, initially at 13 hospitals in Ohio and five in Florida.

Summa Health’s process of care includes measures to ensure appropriate care for patients with severe sepsis or septic shock, according to hospital documentation.
