AI Could Replace Over 50% of Current Software Spending: Mistral AI CEO

February 19, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

More than 50% of enterprise software currently in use could ultimately be displaced by artificial intelligence, according to Arthur Mensch, CEO of Mistral AI. The assertion, made during a CNBC interview, arrives as software companies face increasing investor scrutiny over the potential for AI to disrupt established software-as-a-service (SaaS) business models.

Mensch indicated a significant shift is already underway, with organizations increasingly opting to develop bespoke AI applications rather than relying on pre-packaged SaaS solutions. He estimates that over half of current spending on SaaS products could transition to AI-driven alternatives.

“We are also seeing with our customers that One can create fully customized applications within a few days to run a workflow — for example, a purchasing workflow or supply chain workflows — in a way that, five years ago, would have required a vertical SaaS solution,” Mensch stated. “This platform change is a great opportunity for us, as we now have more than 100 corporate customers who are also turning to us with a desire to perhaps change and modernize their IT systems — for example, getting rid of things they bought 20 years ago and which are starting to develop into quite expensive.”

The comments from the CEO of the European AI firm, positioned as a competitor to OpenAI, reach as global markets prepare for continued volatility driven by developments in artificial intelligence, according to CNBC reporting this week. Concerns about the impact of AI on traditional tech valuations have contributed to what some analysts are calling “scare trading” in the sector.

Mistral AI is also undertaking a substantial infrastructure expansion, announcing a billion-dollar investment in Sweden to bolster its AI capabilities. This move aims to provide European companies with an alternative to US-based AI providers and underscores the growing international competition in the field.
