The arrival of AI-generated content in hollywood felt inevitable. Now, it’s accelerating faster than many predicted.OpenAI, the driving force behind ChatGPT and other generative AI tools, is backing Critterz, a full-length animated feature aiming to drastically reduce production time and costs by leaning heavily on artificial intelligence.

News of the project, first reported by The Wall Street Journal, confirms that Critterz – a woodland adventure about a village disrupted by an outsider – will debut at Cannes in 2026. Produced by London’s Vertigo Films and LA’s native Foreign, the film will utilize OpenAI’s models for a significant portion of its animation and design, with OpenAI providing both the technology and the necessary computing power.

The core proposition is enterprising: create a feature film in just nine months for under $30 million. This is a stark contrast to the typical Hollywood animated feature, which can take years and cost upwards of $100 million to produce.

While voice actors and a small team of artists will be involved, the bulk of the creative workload will fall to AI. The story itself originated as a short film by OpenAI staffer Chad Nelson, though it garnered a lukewarm reception, currently holding a 3.6/10 rating on IMDB.

The project’s proponents frame Critterz as a means of “democratizing” animation, suggesting it will open the field to a wider range of creators.Though, this argument rings hollow. Animation isn’t inherently exclusive; its barriers to entry are skill, dedication, and imagination – qualities accessible to anyone willing to invest the time and effort. The recent Oscar-winning animated film Flow, such as, was created by a small team in Latvia using free software and a budget dwarfed by the salaries of A-list Hollywood voice talent.

Critterz feels less like a democratization effort and more like a challenge to the established animation industry from those unwilling to contribute through traditional means. the central question looms large: if AI can considerably reduce the labor required for animation, what becomes of the artists who have dedicated their lives to the craft? And what kind of stories will be told when algorithms, rather than human inspiration, drive the narrative?

This development also raises serious ethical concerns. Many large language models are trained on copyrighted material without the consent of the original artists, a practice currently facing legal challenges from major studios like Disney,
