He also pointed to a perceived lack of consequences for drivers who harm cyclists, creating a climate where dangerous behavior is more likely to occur. Twight referenced the 2017 death of professional cyclist Michele Scarponi, who was struck and killed by a driver who admitted to using a mobile phone at the time of the incident, as an example of the risks cyclists face.
Twight’s observations echo concerns raised by cyclists who point to disparities in legal protections and penalties for drivers involved in collisions with cyclists. The lack of significant repercussions, they argue, contributes to a sense of impunity and emboldens aggressive behavior. He also contrasted the behavior of drivers in the UK with those in France and Italy, noting that drivers in the latter countries appeared more accustomed to sharing the road with cyclists, even when cyclists broke traffic laws.
