Aggressive Driver Targets Cyclists in Shocking Road Rage Video

March 24, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Footage emerged Tuesday showing two competitive cyclists narrowly avoiding a collision with a vehicle in Orange County, California, an incident that highlights escalating tensions between drivers, and cyclists. The video, captured by one of the cyclists, depicts a driver aggressively maneuvering their vehicle toward the riders during a training exercise.

The incident, which occurred on a currently undisclosed roadway, prompted a response from local law enforcement, though details regarding any investigation or potential charges were not immediately available. The footage, widely circulated on social media, shows the vehicle swerving into the cyclists’ lane, forcing them to grab evasive action to avoid being struck.

This event is not isolated. Reports of aggressive driver behavior toward cyclists have been increasing, according to online cycling communities. A recent post on a cycling-focused Facebook group detailed similar experiences, with cyclists sharing accounts of verbal harassment and dangerous close passes. A Reddit thread from 2022 also discussed strategies for dealing with aggressive drivers, indicating a long-standing concern within the cycling community.

Mark Twight, a cycling and strength coach, wrote in a December 2024 Substack post about the increasing frequency of negative encounters between cyclists and drivers. Twight noted a growing sense of tension and anger among drivers, suggesting that even minor inconveniences caused by cyclists can trigger disproportionate reactions. He also pointed to a perceived lack of consequences for drivers who harm cyclists, creating a climate where dangerous behavior is more likely to occur. Twight referenced the 2017 death of professional cyclist Michele Scarponi, who was struck and killed by a driver who admitted to using a mobile phone at the time of the incident, as an example of the risks cyclists face.

Twight’s observations echo concerns raised by cyclists who point to disparities in legal protections and penalties for drivers involved in collisions with cyclists. The lack of significant repercussions, they argue, contributes to a sense of impunity and emboldens aggressive behavior. He also contrasted the behavior of drivers in the UK with those in France and Italy, noting that drivers in the latter countries appeared more accustomed to sharing the road with cyclists, even when cyclists broke traffic laws.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the Orange County District Attorney’s office had not issued a statement regarding the incident or any potential investigation. Local cycling advocacy groups have called for increased awareness and stricter enforcement of traffic laws to protect cyclists, but have not yet announced any planned demonstrations or further action.
