Agentic Finance: How AI Agents Are Disrupting Traditional Banking

September 28, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

Torsten Slok warns that AI agents capable of optimizing cash balances could cause banks to lose deposits, potentially creating a problem for the entire financial system by affecting loans. This shift toward what is being called “agentic finance” could see households utilizing AI to maximize returns on their cash holdings.

Agentic Finance Explained

Agentic finance refers to AI that doesn’t simply provide answers, but actively acts. These agents can monitor account balances in real-time, compare returns offered by different financial institutions, and automatically move funds into higher-yield accounts, returning them when needed for expenses. According to Slok, If every household used AI agents to optimize the return on their cash balances, banks could lose a large share of the cheap deposits they rely on to make loans, which would be a problem for the entire financial system..

Market Size and Growth

Estimates regarding the size of the agentic AI market in financial services vary. Mordor Intelligence estimates the market at $7.78 billion in 2026, with projections reaching $43.52 billion by 2031. MarketsandMarkets assesses the more specific AI agents segment at approximately $845 million in 2025.

Crypto and Payment Rails

The infrastructure for these AI agents is partially being built within the cryptocurrency space. Coinbase’s x402 protocol, a widely used agentic payment standard, allows AI agents to make payments for online services in stablecoins instantaneously, without requiring an account, card, or human intervention. The x402 Protocol has reportedly processed between 188 million and 205 million transactions, supported by roughly 69,000 active agents.

Industry Support for x402

The x402 Foundation, now governed by the Linux Foundation, has attracted support from major industry players including Cloudflare, Google, Visa, Mastercard, AWS, Circle, and Stripe. Nate Geraci, co-founder of the ETF Institute, has stated that AI and crypto are both coming for the traditional banking model.
