Drones Disrupt Danish Airspace Again,This Time Over Karup Air Force Base
Drones have once again caused disruption in Danish airspace, this time prompting temporary restrictions over Karup Air Force Base in Jutland. The latest incident follows recent closures at Copenhagen and Oslo airports, as well as disruptions in Aalborg, raising concerns about escalating aerial security threats.
Earlier this week,Danish authorities responded to reports of multiple drones operating near Karup, one of Denmark’s key military installations. While the drones departed the airspace after several hours, the recurring nature of these incidents-and their proximity to critical infrastructure-has prompted investigations and heightened vigilance. The European Commission suspects potential Russian involvement, citing the downing of Russian drones by NATO aircraft over Poland earlier this month and recent incursions by Russian fighter jets into Estonian airspace. Secretary-General Mark Rutte characterized the situation as stemming from either deliberate aggression or “outright incompetence.”
The recent wave of drone activity began with hours-long closures at the airports of Copenhagen and Oslo due to drone sightings. Days later, similar disruptions occurred in Aalborg, even forcing a KLM flight to be diverted. Authorities describe the drones as professional-grade, relatively large models, but their origin remains undetermined. The incidents are occurring amid heightened geopolitical tensions and are prompting a reassessment of airspace security protocols across Northern Europe. Investigations are ongoing to determine the source and intent behind these repeated drone incursions.
