Afroman Trial: Lawyer’s Smart Strategy Revealed | Husband and Wife Law Team

March 22, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

A jury on March 18, 2026, ruled in favor of rapper Afroman, whose legal name is Joseph Foreman, in a defamation lawsuit brought by seven Ohio police officers who raided his home in August 2022, according to reports from NPR and Nolo.

The lawsuit stemmed from Afroman’s creation of the song and accompanying music video “Lemon Pound Cake,” which satirized the raid by the Adams County Sheriff’s Office. The officers alleged that the song and related merchandise defamed them and invaded their privacy. Home surveillance video from the raid showed deputies kicking down Afroman’s door and searching his property, according to NPR. The search, conducted on suspicion of drug trafficking and kidnapping, yielded no charges against the rapper.

The trial gained attention for its unusual circumstances and the lighthearted social media content it generated, often centered around the “Lemon Pound Cake” video, Nolo reported. Afroman had reportedly nicknamed one of the deputies “Lemon Pound Cake” because he believed the officer paused to observe a dessert on the kitchen counter during the raid.

A key moment in the trial, as reported by MSN, came when the ex-wife of one of the suing deputies, Shawn Grooms, testified that the failure of their marriage was due to Grooms’ own actions, not the song. Her testimony appeared to undermine the claim that Afroman’s work had damaged the officer’s personal life.

The verdict underscores the protections afforded to freedom of speech and expression under the First Amendment, according to Nolo. Afroman had previously stated he was attempting to address perceived injustices through his music after officers allegedly broke his gate, damaged security cameras, took $400 in cash, and frightened his family during the 2022 raid, as reported by NPR.

TribLive.com reported five key takeaways from the case, but did not elaborate beyond the initial reporting of the verdict.
